Frequently Asked Questions about Mt. Eolus

Can I combine all of the Chicago Basin 14ers into a single climb day from a high camp?

Yes, it is entirely possible to link Windom Peak, Sunlight Peak, Mount Eolus, and North Eolus in one massive pushing day from a high camp in Chicago Basin. However, doing so requires superb physical endurance, high-level alpine route-finding skills, and a perfectly clear weather forecast. The order matters immensely: most hikers choose to tackle the spicier, more technical Class 3/4 moves on Mount Eolus and Sunlight first, saving the relatively straightforward Class 2 standard West Ridge of Windom for last so they can grind it out even if fatigue has set in.

What is the "Catwalk" on Mount Eolus, and how exposed is it?

The Catwalk is a narrow ridge before the final summit pitch on Eolus. It sits at approximately 13,800 feet and is roughly 100 feet long. While it is flat and wide enough to walk across comfortably under normal conditions, it features substantial drop-offs on both sides. Navigating the Catwalk requires a steady head; if the rock is wet, icy, or if high alpine winds are ripping across the basin, it becomes more hazardous.

Is Mount Eolus a good choice for my first Class 3 14er?

Mount Eolus is generally not recommended as an introduction to Class 3 climbing due to its remote location and high-consequence exposure. If you suffer a panic attack or an injury on the Catwalk or the upper east face ledges, you are a grueling 14-mile journey away from the nearest road, making rescue operations incredibly difficult. It is highly recommended to practice your Class 3 skills on more accessible Front Range or Sawatch peaks—such as Kelso Ridge on Torreys Peak or the East Ridge of Mount Bierstadt—before making the serious logistical commitment to enter Chicago Basin and climb Eolus.

Can I safely leave my heavy backpacking gear behind for the summit push?

Yes, the vast majority of hikers drop their heavy overnight backpacks at their Chicago Basin campsite and use a lightweight daypack for the actual climb. If you leave your camp/gear unattended anywhere on the mountain, ensure all food, trash, and scented items are sealed airtight inside a hard-sided container so that local marmots mice, goats, and deer don't chew through your gear to reach your snacks.
