Unranked PT 13500 is now Ranked PT 13541.
41’ gained seems like a lot. Any info on how / why this summit got 41 more feet higher?

I should be on a mountain
Re: Colorado LiDAR Findings
Are you talking about the one by Indy Pass? It already was ranked, but yes it did gain 41'. The 13,500' elevation was interpolated based on the closed contours. I suspect that had something to do with it, and the survey could have been missing a contour which messed with the interpolation.CheapCigarMan wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 4:26 pm Unranked PT 13500 is now Ranked PT 13541.

There has been a lot of that type of stuff with this LiDAR confirmation, sometimes missing, sometimes extra contours. Including at interpolated saddles. North Maroon gained 95' of prominence despite only gaining 8' of elevation because the saddle was so far off, it must have had 2 extra contours in that saddle.

Re: Colorado LiDAR Findings
While hiking Black Mountain (Moffat Cty HP) last week, we noticed a helicopter taking an unusual flight pattern, sticking very close to the terrain and repeatedly criss-crossing the area. I caught a view of it, and noticed the gear protruding from the front.
Was this chopper possibly conducting LiDAR measurements?

According to the South Park bulletin Facebook group, there was some USGS survey readings going on by helicopter this week so I think that probably is in fact what you saw.RyanSchilling wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 9:13 am While hiking Black Mountain (Moffat Cty HP) last week, we noticed a helicopter taking an unusual flight pattern, sticking very close to the terrain and repeatedly criss-crossing the area. The USGS is currently conducting a radiometric survey collecting geologic data of the Colorado mineral belt. That’s likely what that helicopter was doing.

Re: Colorado LiDAR Findings
Thank you, both! Very interesting.
EDIT: Found a recent article, though it doesn't mention Moffat County, which is considered well outside of CO's mineral belt.
