1 shows much of the route. From the Shavano/Tabeguache trailhead, follow the trail about 0.1 mile to reach a junction (
2). Turn right onto the Colorado Trail and continue for 1/4 mile to another junction, then turn left onto the Mt. Shavano trail (
3). Follow a wide, rocky section of the trail briefly, then turn right onto the well-defined Shavano trail, which heads north and then west (
4,
5). Switchback up another pitch to reach a flat area above 10,700'. After crossing the flat area, ascend west along a stream (
6) before crossing it at 10,900' (
7). Continue to a corner
near 11,200' (
8). Turn right, hike east then northwest along a small ridge. In this area, you'll appreciate the countless log steps that have been installed recently. When you reach 11,800', the trail turns southwest as you approach tree line (
9).
Exit the trees and traverse west along Shavano's southeast slopes (
10,
11). After reaching the west end of the slopes, follow the trail leading toward the saddle (
12,
13). Reach the saddle
at 13,350', where the final pitch to Shavano's summit comes into view (
14,
15). Cross the wide saddle and begin the final 700-foot ascent by starting along the ridge's left side. You will find several trail segments, so stick to the best-defined one (
16,
17). At 13,800', veer slightly to the right (
18) and weave through stable rocks to reach the summit (
19,
20).
