If you have a 4WD vehicle, this is the easiest way to get Mt. Edwards and McClellan Mountain together. From the Waldorf Mine area, you can seen McClellan (
1) but not Edwards. Walk southwest on the road that leads to Argentine Pass (
2 and
3) and after less than 0.25 mile, you'll reach a creek -
4. Leave the road and follow the creek west into a basin, below Mt. Edwards -
5. Continue toward the west end of the basin (
6 and
7) to reach steeper terrain, near 12,400' -
8. Without a trail, ascend west and then northwest to reach the Edwards side of the Edwards-McClellan saddle, near 13,400' -
9,
10 and
11.
Turn left and start up Edwards' northeast ridge -
12 and
13. The ridge is steeper than the ascent from the basin but still Class 2. Above 13,700', the angle eases a bit as you approach the summit -
14 and
15. Walk over to the top to find excellent views of 14ers Grays and Torreys (
16) and in the opposite direction, McClellan Mountain -
17.
Descend back to the saddle -
18. If you decide not to go for McClellan, simply descend via the same route. If you're continuing to McClellan, it's 0.5 mile and 200' of elevation gain to reach the summit. Walk northeast across the saddle and start up McClellan's southwest ridge -
19. You won't find much of a trail here but the route is obvious - stay just right of the edge and follow the ridge (
20 and
21) up to the summit -
22 and
23. For the descent, return toward the Edwards-McClellan saddle and angle south back into the basin.
