Trailhead

On U.S. 285, one mile north of the U.S. 50 junction near Poncha Springs, turn west onto County Road (CR) 140. This turn is about 21 miles south of Buena Vista, and across the highway from the Salida airport. Measure from here. On CR 140, drive 1.7 miles and then turn right on CR 250. Continue to 2.6 miles where the road turns to dirt. Once you enter BLM land the road becomes rough and rocky. At 5.9 miles, stay left at a junction and continue on FR 252. At 9.0 miles, stay left at another junction and continue a bit farther to reach the trailhead at 9.2 miles. If the lot is full, there is overflow parking if you continue 0.1 mile beyond the trailhead.

Route

First, follow the Mt. Shavano - East Slopes Route to the summit of Mt. Shavano. This covers approximately 4.75 miles and 4,500 feet of elevation gain. From Shavano, reaching Tabeguache Peak requires an additional mile of hiking - 1. Be sure to check the weather before committing, as the only feasible return route is back over Shavano.

From Shavano's summit, Tabeguache Peak is clearly visible to the northwest - 2 and 3. Descend along Shavano's long, rocky summit ridge, heading northwest - 4 and 5. Cover about 0.6 mile of Class 2 terrain, losing 600 feet of elevation along the way. At 13,700', reach the broad saddle connecting the two peaks. Cross the saddle and ascend Tabeguache's east ridge. Follow trail segments across stable talus, and if you lose the trail, simply ascend directly along the ridge - 7 and 8. After gaining 500 feet from the saddle, reach the summit - 9 and 10. Reverse your route to return.
