From Summit Lake to Mt Evans via Mt Spalding
I met up with one of the volunteer workers at the end of his shift on Thursday 07/15 (around 2 pm) and asked about the closed trail from Summit Lake to Mt Evans via Mt Spalding. I was told that I could climb at that time (who wants to attempt a summit at 2 in the afternoon???) or I would be able to be escorted the next morning between the hours of 5 am and 9 am - before the excavating equipment would be used. I had no problem when I showed up at 7 am and was escorted past the construction. There were several other hikers ahead of me who were turned away. I persisted with what I was told and was able to pass - by the same gentleman who told me about the escort. Guess you have to know who to talk to and what to say. Lucky me....

I was surprised at how "slow" it took me from Summit Lake to Mt. Spalding - approx 2 hours. And then another 2 hrs to Mt. Evans. But I did take my time with frequent breaks (and breakfast at the top of Spalding).

Don't make the mistake of coming down Hiker Route #5 from Mt. Evans - like I did. I "lost" the trail and had to scramble over the rocks/boulders. It took me nearly 3 1/2 hours for the descent. I should have just taken the 5 miles of easy paved road! But it is all in the journey, and I wouldn't have done it any other way.

This is my third successful 14er summit.
