 First Snow

It took me roughly 2hrs 20min to hike up to the summit and 1hr 30min to descend back to the trailhead. These are “moving” times and exclude the time I spent stopping to talk with other hikers and my time spent enjoying the views at the summit. Weather was ideal: about 40 degrees, mostly sunny, and light winds. I had planned on hiking Sherman before the first snow of the season but mother nature and El Niño had other plans. I knew the storm on Wednesday had left some snow but figured that it wouldn’t be too much. I thought this might be my “window” to summit Sherman before winter really set in. And my hunch was correct. I knew the sun would be coming out on Thursday and temps would be above freezing. What found as I started in late morning was that the snow that was present was tacky, making it very manageable. And I got a huge bonus on running into some goats on the final push up the ridge (see picture ). Those goats were coming straight down the trail from the summit and did not care at all that I was on the trail as well. Regarding the road: Yeah, it’s VERY VERY bumpy. Just plan on taking it slow. Due to the presence of some serious ruts, I decided to stop a few hundreds yards short of the gate. No big deal to add on the short walk up to the gate. Once on the summit I found the views to be very good, and the trail itself was easy to follow. Overall this is a nice summit hike. I came into contact with only a couple of other hikers. I would imagine though that during the summer there would be many more than there were on this day.
