Wednesday, August 21, 2024: I completed my sixth summit of 14er Mt. Sherman. I wasn't solo. I had two friends from church. Carol claimed her VERY FIRST 14er today, and Pastor Lyle made his second ascent of this peak. He checked off several other 14ers in the past.
As we arrived at the trailhead, we were greeted by a moose mama and her twins. Blessing #1
The hike started a bit chilly and overcast, but it seemed most of the day's rain happened before we started. Blessing #2
The weather got nicer at every turn for the first 1.25 miles, when we reached the saddle before our more intense climb would begin. Blessing #3
The wind picked up and it got very frigid as we moved up toward the ridge where it was pretty intense. Our persistence carried us through the icy, 30-40mph gusts. Blessing #4
Once we reached the summit plateau there was no wind. We lingered for an hour on top, refueling with snacks and water and getting our summit photos. Blessing #5
A mountain billy goat bachelor was wandering just below the summit apparently hoping for company, so another hiker got some fantastic closeups and shared his pictures with us. Blessing #6
The descent was pleasant without as much wind as earlier, and due to morning rain the trail was damp enough to provide traction for us so we didn't have to deal with bone dry, slippery gravel. Blessing #7
Sprinkles began again in our last half mile or so back to the pickup. It was almost 4PM, and we were glad the 2PM rain prediction was delayed. Blessing #8
On our drive home we saw a yearling bull moose trot briskly across the road, too fast to catch any photos. He was magnificent! Blessing #9
We enjoyed having the time together to get to know each other better and share the day. There were many other favors that came together and made a fantastic day for us. Blessing #10
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
