Thursday, July 25, 2024. It was a very beautiful day, without the high wind that is notorious on Mt. Sherman. It was also not as smokey from wildfires as I expected it to be. There was not the rain or hail that I have faced on three of my previous summits of this beginner 14er. It's not easy, but it's a good one for beginners. 'Easy' and '14er' should never be used in the same sentence. This was an excellent day, and might be the last time I take this hike. Another friend said I am a glutton for punishment! It hurts, and I take my time, but I think I will do it once more.
Start: 7:15 AM from right at the gate
Reached Saddle: 8:35 AM
Reached Summit: 10:30 AM
Left Summit: 11:20 AM
Reached Pickup: 1:10 PM
This was my fifth trip up Mt. Sherman. My first time was a solo hike at age 61 in 2017. I was up in 2 hours and down in 1.25 hours. Yesterday's hike took longer. I am grateful for my hiking partner's patience. She could probably have been up and back a couple of times. There is a 14-year difference between us.
We started at the Fourmile Creek trailhead. I have never taken the other route, only because it's farther from home. I found a great spot to park, probably because sunrise hikers were already done and gone.
My pickup seen on our return, parked maybe only ten feet below the gate.
There is ALWAYS a patch of snow as we begin heading up the slope after hiking past the old mine area.
My friend Carla on the snow area
We refueled a little on the saddle before heading up to the summit.
On the saddle between 13er Mt. Sheridan (seen behind us) and 14er Mt. Sherman.Carla taking a break before our last few steps to the summit.
We took a few summit pictures.
Enjoying her successful climb! My fifth time on Sherman and Carla's first 14er.High-fiving each other!Resting on the summit.
