 Snowmass - standard route

My family ascended the standard Mt Snowmass trailhead starting from the Log Jam (we backpacked in) on June 20th at 4:30am. The trail to Snowmass Lake was lovely with patches of snow between Log Jam and Snowmass Lake. The snow around Snowmass Lake was deep and soft - snow shoes were helpful, but did not keep us from sliding on the steep slope to the lake. This part was fairly miserable. Then, we followed the cairns through the talus field. This turned out to be extremely dangerous! DO NOT FOLLOW THE CAIRNS! I almost perished in an unprovoked talus slide and had to dive to safety to avoid being smashed by talus that was 2 feet x 1 foot. The ground under the talus is so wet that the talus is not firmly attached to the dirt. Instead, follow the route that I have marked on my map. There is a faint trail. This is the route recommended by author Gary Roach. The snowfield to the far left seems like another good option, but, I don't know that for certain. We did not continue the route after our encounter with the "death talus" and instead chose to descend in the area marked in red. BTW, I have hiked around thirty 14ers and haven't experienced anything this dangerous before. I wanted to save someone else from this trauma!

Was there snow still on the direct route (climbers right) over closer to the summit?
