The Mt. Evans Ascent is an annual race up Mt. Evans (will not take place in 2024).
It's a good value compared to some other races. The entire Mt. Evans Road is closed down for the race and there's four aid stations on the way up (not counting the finish line at the summit). Very nice soft cotton hoodie race shirt as well.
There's also a round trip version of the race. Much fewer people did that. Just seems too masochistic to do that to your legs.
On the ascent race you get a special award if you finish in under 2:40:00 for the males (I think it's 3:00:00 for the females). I initially was aiming for this but kept getting sick during training so ended up just trying to get under 3:00:00. Ended up 3:03:30. Last year this would have been first place in my 40-44 age division by far but this year it was only good for 5th place. That's the randomness of age group placing I suppose. I believe the first place guy got around 1:44:00
I had gloves in my pockets which I never used and I never put on that wind breaker but I had a t-shirt on underneath that lightweight long-sleeved shirt. A lot of the other runners just had shorts with nothing underneath and a long-sleeved shirt. The winner just had short shorts and a tank top!
I was surprised to find that there's actually a couple of sections with maybe a 1% or 2% decline on the way up so you can really make up a lot of time there. There were a couple of sections where you had to step on some ice. And these were in the fast sections so I'm positive at least one person must have fallen. After finishing a was walking around in that upper parking lot and all of a sudden I got a horrible calf cramp that brought me immediately to the ground. Luckily one of the shuttle bus drivers immediately started massaging it.
There was an interesting thread in the forums regarding the tradeoff between training cardio and training weights for an event like this. There were certainly well-informed people on the pro-weight lifting side but at no point during the race was I wishing I focused less on cardio and more on weight lifting. And at no point was I wishing I had heavier legs with bigger muscles that would require more oxygen

Mt. Evans road was actually closed from snow about 6 days before the race and closed above Echo Lake 5 days before the race.

The pass to drive up Mt Evans is (I believe) $12 plus $2.50 online convenience fee. If the road is entirely closed down on your day to go, they refund you the $12 but keep the $2.50 fee!
