 A 5-year-old's first fourteener
With the very low snowpack this year I wanted to give both of my boys a chance to hike their first fourteener before they turned 6. We got a great weekend for it but one of my sons decided he didn't want to. So I took one of my sons and my daughter. My brother and his kids joined us as well.

I picked Antero because I knew we'd be able to keep it short and easy for his first trip. It always helps keep their interest if the first trip goes well. Looking back, we could have done something much harder. I don't think this trip even challenged him, besides maybe the wind.

The trail was easy and clear except one large patch of snow blocking the main trail just below the summit. So we did do some scrambling on talus. That made it a little more interesting. Between that and the wind my daughter said this one is the hardest she's done yet. She's done 5 including Bierstadt from Guanella Pass in some snow.

This is a great TR for me to read as I have a young son. I hope to get him started at 4 or 5 also! Thanks for the pictures and the useful narrative.

I don't think most 5 year olds have the drive to do that. I like the picture of him with his hands raised in the air, what an accomplishment! Great job to all the kids, sounds like your daughter has a good start mountaineering. Thanks for sharing.

So cool to see your son (and daughter!) out there with you - looks like it was a great day!

My daughter is about to turn 4, and I can't wait until I can take her on a hike up a 14er with me. Closest I've gotten is hiking Pikes and meeting her at the top when she was 2 (she rode the cog).

Wisconsin in 2011 and didn't get to start climbing until age 24. Always wished I had gotten my feet wet much earlier and I'm sure your children will be so appreciative of the opportunities that you have provided them to explore the wild in such a bold way. Super cute pics. Congrats to you all on your summit, but more importantly, a meaningful experience. Don't have kids yet, but really looking forward to something like this!

I am starting to think about taking my Granddaughter hiking. Good to see kids that age up on the mountains. Any interest in taking me up Little Bear this year? Let me know

No kids going with me but I plan on summiting this weekend on Fathers Day. Plan to drive my Jeep Wrangler to appx. 12k (before the snow field) on Saturday afternoon. Nice to see the Cherokee did so well.

Kevin, would the 4th of July work for you? My family is out of town then so I'm wanting to make plans with someone. I'd really like to do a 4th class mountain too.

We passed you guys as you were coming down, I recognize your kids faces. I was with my 6yr old daughter(3rd Centennial) and 2 dogs, my buddy and his son and daughter(their 1st 14er). Was a great day, except for a little bit of wind exposure on certain parts of the ridge. Way to get it done :)

Great Memory

Congrats, Josh on a big moment in Colorado Fatherhood. I loved bringing my toddler son up Sherman last year and will always treasure that memory. I can't wait until he's at an age where he can complete a mountain himself (without straining my back.)
