6/22/2011 Posted On: 6/29/2011 By: vistaphil Info: I drove my ‘02 Outback all the way to the Huron trailhead, very slow and cautious but did not bottom out in the deep ruts. Road was dry.
6/17/2011 Posted On: 6/17/2011 By: thatnissanguy Info: Made it to 4WD trailhead in a stock 96 bronco on bald BFG A/T‘s. About half way to the upper trailhead from the lower trailhead there is a muddy section that will stop most vehicles. Recent rains and heavy traffic have made this "crux" even more interesting (Read: deep and rutted). Do not attempt without high clearance.
6/17/2011 Posted On: 6/20/2011 By: globreal Info: Note....that muddy section mentioned in the last update is in the big clearing on the way to Huron‘s TH. I added a bunch of rocks into those mud ruts. If someone added some more rocks in those ruts, then most 4x4's should have no problem getting through it.
6/11/2011 Posted On: 6/11/2011 By: Doctor No Info: 2wd Huron trailhead is easy - a little water on the road from runoff, but nothing major. I went a bit down the 4wd road, and it started to look very wet, so I turned around. (And there was enough smoke from the Arizona fires that I didn‘t attempt a summit, so I can‘t say for sure if my impressions are valid).
5/14/2011 Posted On: 5/14/2011 By: tmathews Info: 390 is drivable to the Winfield town site. There is a bit of lingering snow right before you reach it, though, that might give a little bit of trouble to low-clearance vehicles. Lots of lingering snow up to the S. Winfield TH. We postholed along the road in early morning. Finding the TH is difficult unless you know where you are going -- especially through the wide-open areas. Look for lingering ski and showshoe tracks, but they may be covered due to this afternoon‘s thundersnow storms.
4/23/2011 Posted On: 4/25/2011 By: deckmatt4 Info: A group of us attempted to hike Huron Peak 4/23/11. Chaffee 390 from US 24 is driveable to roughly 9.8 miles with a good clearance 4WD vehicle. At that mileage there is a large snow drift that got us stuck for a good hour. From that point it was just under 2 miles to Winfield and another 2.1 from there to the 4WD trailhead. There is still a lot of snow and as we found out snow shoes were a must. We did post hole some however with out snow shoes it would have been way worse.
11/6/2010 Posted On: 11/6/2010 By: Monster5 Info: Easily drivable to about 100 yards past the 2WD TH. A couple icy patches before Winfield but nothing to cause a problem. A 4Runner made it above the ice/snowpack in the trees up to the 4WD TH. Snowshoes/traction were not used on the hike.
10/23/2010 Posted On: 10/25/2010 By: tmathews Info: Drove up to the TH in a couple of inches of snow. Only a few patches remained on the road on the way out. Probably won‘t be able to get to the TH for much longer this year.
10/16/2010 Posted On: 10/16/2010 By: lizard Info: Made it up in my Subaru Outback - easily done if you drive slowly and know where your wheels are. Note - when starting up the trail do not go straight at the main trail sign Instead turn left where you will see the Huron Trail sign
9/24/2010 Posted On: 9/30/2010 By: Gator Info: Drove to the upper "4WD" trailhead in a 2WD 4Runner with no problems.
8/30/2010 Posted On: 9/7/2010 By: njlinderer Info: Made it all the way in a Forester. A few difficult spots. Go slow.

8/26/2010 Posted On: 8/26/2010 By: BillMiddlebrook Info: Yup, the road has certainly been improved since I last drove it but it‘s still 4WD. Drove the 4WD Chevy Suburban up there - no problem. Cars should park at the lower trailhead.
8/6/2010 Posted On: 8/6/2010 By: TravelingMatt Info: Road is fine, no damage from recent rains, although there are a few puddles and muddy areas.
8/1/2010 Posted On: 8/1/2010 By: Neil Info: Agree with previous poster. I took a 2006 Outback very slowly and made it just fine. |
