6/13/2012 Posted On: 6/15/2012 By: richwill Info: TRAILHEAD IS FREE OF SNOW AND EASILY ACCESSABLE TO WINFIELD IN ANY VEHICLE. 4WD RD 390 IS RELATIVELY DRY AND CAN BE ACCESSED IN ANY DECENT 4WD.
5/6/2012 Posted On: 5/6/2012 By: itsallgood Info: South Winfield 4-wheel drive trailhead accessible with stock Jeep Cherokee (XJ). There were some small snow patches and a few small creek crossings but nothing any decent truck/SUV can‘t handle.
4/7/2012 Posted On: 4/8/2012 By: Frontrangeskier Info: County Road 390 is clear all the way to the Winfield Town site. That inclides the Missouri Gulch Trailhead. The South Winfield 2WD Trailhead for Mt. Huron is clear. You can drive about another half mile up the road to a small parking area heading towards Mt. Hurons South Winfield 4WD Trailhead. Then the snow begins. There is no point trying to go any further in ANY Vehicle. You will just get stuck. Couple places to pitch a tent. Just park and hike.
4/6/2012 Posted On: 4/7/2012 By: mattdecoste Info: We attempted the 4wd road with a Jeep Cherokee and Subaru AWD and only made it a few hundred yards beyond winfield before having to stop. Encountered spotty 6"-14" snow drifts across the road and decided not to chance it especially considering the road is fairly narrow in most spots and turning around in snow might be difficult. Perhaps a beefed up 4wd with chains could make it. Not sure.
3/30/2012 Posted On: 3/31/2012 By: jmanner Info: Got stuck in a single stretch of Snow 1.4 miles shy of Winfield, our car is a AWD Volvo station wagon. Its probably a none issue for a Outback with good tires and some speed but, at this point (03/30-03-31) a regular sedan FWD cannot make it over that slushy trap. | 2 |

2/19/2012 Posted On: 2/20/2012 By: wattsup Info: Almost got stuck 8.5 miles up the county road to Windfield on 2/19. Missouri TH might be OK but Huron won‘t be accessible for a little while.
1/2/2012 Posted On: 1/3/2012 By: AndYouSeeMe Info: 2WD could make it to Winfield, with 4WD you can make it ~.4 more miles before it becomes impassable. Leaving 2 miles to the summer trailhead for Huron and The Apostles. Trail on 4wd road is very well packed and you could get by sans snowshoes. Trails to Huron and up to Apostle Basin are packed but snowshoes were helpful when you accidentally stepped off the track.
12/17/2011 Posted On: 12/17/2011 By: tmathews Info: 4WD can still make it to Winfield. There were a couple of sketchy spots. I only drove to the town site, but I did see a vehicle parked south of the bridge.
11/10/2011 Posted On: 11/11/2011 By: richwill Info: Rd. 390 was dry from highway 24 for about 3 or 4 miles. Snow appeared quickly, with 6" or so in places up to Winfield. Turning left at Winfield the road was snowpacked 10-12" over ice. I left my 4WD truck at Winfield & hiked the 2 miles to the trailhead. The trail to Huron was windblown & had 10-12" of snow, with deeper drifts in spots. Unless you're very familiar with the trail, you'll lose it within a mile. I wouldn't go farther than Winfield unless you have a SERIOUS 4WD. With morning windchill temps at -10, digging out would be no fun.
10/29/2011 Posted On: 10/30/2011 By: jmanner Info: The road up to the trailhead was fairly good; The snow has provided a nice platform for cars to drive over. We didn‘t drive all the way to the trailhead but, from walking it and driving a portion of it in out AWD Volvo, we believe that anything with a clearance of equal to or greater than an Outback with OK tires could get up it. By Tuesday, Nov. 1st(2011) I imagine most of the route will be more muddy than anything. -I have photos if you‘d like them.
10/23/2011 Posted On: 10/24/2011 By: wincoder Info: Road is bare and dry. The 4WD section was mostly dry except for a few puddles. A little narrow in spots for my Dodge 2500. No snow.
10/1/2011 Posted On: 10/2/2011 By: Unknown Info: The 4-wheel drive road was a piece of cake in my Honda Ridgeline using the "go-around" mentioned previously. Just take it slow. No snow at all, and 390 is still washboard city. | 1 |

8/16/2011 Posted On: 8/16/2011 By: mrschaible Info: Road is clear to the 4wd trail head. A normal clearance 2wd vehicle, with careful driving, can easily make it to the 4wd trail head. Saw several normal clearance vehicles at the trail head. Co Rd 390 is wash board heaven!
8/11/2011 Posted On: 8/12/2011 By: shaberer0511 Info: The road to the Clear Creek/South Winfield trailhead for Huron Peak is not really well marked and rough. Watch where you are going and take your time. High clearance is a must, most suvs should be alright, but 4WD is highly recommended. Several stream crossings that require some steep drops and climbs. Take your time and watch the road and you should be fine. The road starts out nice and is worst towards the top. |
