Peak Condition Updates

Route: Northeast Ridge

Info: The road is completely passable up to the gate by any vehicle (2012 Ford Fusion with pretty low clearance did just fine), just take it easy on the rougher parts. The trail itself is pretty clear, although there was about 200 feet total of walking through packed snow below the saddle. Once you reach the saddle, there is no snow on the mountain anywhere near the trail. Easy climb to the top.

Info: Pretty clear! Submitted Sherman and traversed across to Weston (Sherman - Sheridan - Peerless - Horseshoe - Ptarmigan - Weston) and back down to the Fourmile trailhead on the path north of Horseshoe. There was a short patch of snow on the climb up to the saddle between Sherman and Sheridan, but no traction was needed. Otherwise snowfields were avoidable on this stretch.

Info: Road is dry until the small lot just down from the gate. The lot at the gate is preceded by deep snow/ruts, and the lot contains a large drift.

Overnight temps weren't low enough for snow to be terribly crusty, so some post-holing was had on ascent. I carried my snowshoes just in case I encountered problematic depths but stashed them on the saddle. Never used them but was tempted to on descent because the snow was so soft and shifty. Decided to just suffer through it but have zero regrets about bringing the snowshoes just in case.

There is still a cornice but not prominent. Ended up picking a line on a low enough angled slope where there was a pause in the cornice. Kick-stepped/axe-plunged my way up and used the axe as an anchor to accompany some moves to overcome the soft snow at the very top. Then used the axe to aid in a lovely glissade down the same way.

In other words: full winter conditions out there. Glad I brought my full winter pack and ice axe. Do not recommend anybody new/newer venturing out to this area (or others like it) until melt-off occurs.

Info: No flotation needed. No traction needed. Broke trail for the group headed to Sherman on the slope just below the Sherman / Sheridan saddle. Only place where I postholed and about shin deep. Highest winds I've ever encountered. Non stop from the evening before until I got back to treeline. Beautiful snow formations on the rocks. Continued on to Peerless from Sheridan.

Info: Party of 3 with a successful summit. Went and got Sherman first and then went and got Sheridan. Mostly bare with some snow. No post holing. Left snowshoes in car cause they weren't necessary.

Info: Climbed starting at 11 AM. The cornice all along the ridge between Sheridan and Sherman is falling apart rapidly so it's not safe to climb over it or under it in spite of the fact many were doing that. There is a dry approach to Sheridan that avoids snow totally by heading up just south of the summit. Things are melting out rapidly so I'd expect most of the snow to be gone in the next week or two. The road is totally dry to the gate.

Info: Started from the Leavick site at 5 am (got there in a 2WD). Hiked up to the gate fairly easily, no floatation necessary. Avoided the cornice on the saddle by cutting left up to Sheridan. There is a dry section of the last push up Sheridan with remnants of an old trail, no equipment needed. Descended down the standard route and headed up Sherman. Dry trail behind the cornice. Nasty wind the whole way from Sheridan to Sherman.

Info: Conditions still the same based on the latest Sherman report (1/10) to the saddle. Not much snow at all on the north face. Looked easily bootable to the top. Could probably make it over the Peerless easily as well.

Info: Drove nearly the whole dirt road in 2WD, only used 4WD maybe the last mile. Snow increases the closer you get to the gate but in big patches interrupted by dirt. I went the whole way to the summit with no flotation or traction just fine. Snow is not consolidated but the patches are easy to avoid and if you do step on them the most you'll post hole is up to the shin but mostly just a few inches. I had to take off my hat and unzip my jacket I was overheating so much. Summit is basically free of snow except for the shelter.
Only saw one hiker, everybody else today went for Sherman the 14er. Its condition looked the same as Sheridan.

Route: From Peerless
Posted On: 9/21/2020, By: Sglm14
Info: From Peerless mountain, we descended approximately 600' to the saddle between Peerless and Sheridan then it's pretty much straight up to the summit. No snow from the descent of Peerless all the way to Sheridan.

Info: Summer conditions on all sides of the mountain, both coming from the saddle with Sherman as well as the saddle with Peerless/Horseshoe. No snow left anywhere, and easy to find trails.

Info: Sheridan, Peerless, and Horseshoe. One patch of snow at the Dauntless Mine, but not an issue. Went up Sheridan between the snow fields (pic #1, Sheridan from Peerless). A few patches of snow towards the top of Horseshoe, but mostly avoidable or not an issue. Second pic shows Iowa Gulch conditions from Sheridan.

Info: Besides the short stretch of unavoidable snow along the road shortly after the split (referenced in angry's report from Saturday), it's now possible to avoid snow all the way to the cairn containing the summit register. There's still some to walk over if you want to reach the “other” summit (I myself wasn't sure which is the real one; however, there's no reason not to hit both), but it's fairly inconsequential. No need for traction, flotation, or even gaiters, as long as you're following the road to the best of your ability.

Info: Summer conditions. Did not use traction or flotation. Two areas with unavoidable snow: 1) road a little past gate before you turn off and 2) around ~13,200 before gaining ridge. Both less than 150ft and inconsequential.

Info: East Slopes route is mostly snow-free. All unavoidable snow is on the road, firm in the morning and a sloppy mess on the way out. Upper section of the route is 90% dry and is easy enough to go around any remaining snow patches. Wind higher than forecasted today, otherwise a perfect day for a summit. Started 5:45am, back to car 12:30pm. Didn't use spikes or snowshoes.

Saw moose & elk from the car on the way in, ptarmigan on the hike out. And a very tiny alpine wildflower. We parked at the lower parking near the Leavick site, but could have made it to the upper 4wd parking near the Silver Horseshoe Dr intersection.
