Hoosier Ridge

Peak Condition Updates

Info: The section in the trees still has a lot of snow. The willows and snow were a slushy mess this afternoon. It was firm as of 10am though. There are several areas on the ridge which are snow free and easy to traverse, but a lot of snow still too. I'd recommend traction and floatation.

Info: Since getting turned on drift we went for hoosier. Nice trench in place from trailhead to summit. Very straight forward. Great place for sunset!!

Info: Very nice hike although windy; we measured gusts of ~45mph. Snowshoes required through the willow section above the trees but we dropped them once we reached the first large cairn on the ridge (we left the summer trail and stayed on the ridge/continental divide). Snow mostly windblown and firm with a few soft spots. Spikes would have been helpful in a few spots, primarily coming off the summit of Hoosier Ridge heading toward the reds.

Info: From the trailhead to treeline pay attention! You do not follow the road all the way to the radio towers, instead hopping off the road at a curve. Once above treeline the route is obvious. You don't need to top out on every bump on the ridge, many can and should be skirted for time/ease. To get to Red Mountain and Red Peak you can wrap around the ridge's summit instead of going directly over the top, which will save a little bit of elevation gain.

Info: I followed the GPX route, but the trail is hard to find once off the main cell tower road. It was very overgrown with vegetation. There are some key cairns along the route, especially on the ridge lines. No route is really needed as long as you are careful in the loose rock. Some small snow fields on south side of ridges, but dry the entire route.

Info: Left the parking lot at 7:30. First mile is deep with snow. It held on the way out but snowshoes were mandatory on the way back. Snowshoes are unnecessary past the treeline, so recommend stashing them. Everything clear past the treeline.

Info: Ridgeline is pretty much scoured, but microspikes would be helpful in places. Also, with the freeze/thaw cycle, they will be more helpful in the coming days. However, the snow is mostly avoidable once you get up on the ridge. I hauled my snowshoes up to the first high point, but they weren't necessary up high. However, I would take them and stash them at tree line, as the last mile back through the trees once the snow loosens up would be postholey hell without them.

Info: Don't ditch the snowshoes! I needed them down low, as expected, but stashed them shortly past the low SW saddle that connects Silverheels, and then found myself wallowing knee deep for some upper stretches between the ridge bumps.

Info: Road was totally dry, parking lot ws empty on a Tuesday late morning. The climb up was mostly snow, I'd guess 80% coverage. Most of it was wind blown and pretty solid. A little breakable crust. Never put on traction though I was using brand new shoes and they were still pretty grippy. Similar conditions on the trek out to the Reds. VERY friggin' windy! At times when I crossed a saddle I was seriously leaning into it...

Info: The small amount of snow was only an inch or two deep and easily avoidable.

Info: About two thirds of the the trail from the trailhead to around treeline is clear. The other third expect mostly 1 foot deep post holing with a few areas up to 3 feet deep. There isn't a good way around the snow fields, but the snow is melting fast. Had two small kids with me and only made it to treeline.

Info: From the Trailhead to about a half mile above tree line there is a distinct trail that is fairly well packed. As stated in the post form November, if you step off the trail you are post holing up to 2 feet. The trail is faint after that and I only managed to stay on it because I followed a gentleman who was on his was to Silverheels. Once on the ridge most of the route is windblown and clear of any considerable snow.

Info: This will likely change soon with the new storm in a few days, but should give an overview of the surrounding area. From Hoosier Pass to treeline, step off the trail and there is 12-18" of unsupportive snow. On the descent I did not wear snowshoes and had a few falling trapdoor steps on the mostly solid and supportive packed trail. Pic #1 is Hoosier Ridge mostly blown out above treeline. Pic #2 is looking toward Bross and Lincoln. Pic #3 is looking toward Quandary and the Tenmile Range.
