Route: Rosalie Group
Posted On: 5/9/2020, By: RWinters
Info: Trail is dry to 10,200 ft where patchy ice/snow begins. No traction is needed. Patchiness continues to treeline. Above treeline most snow is avoidable except the last 300 ft or so on the upper mountain. Feels like summer.

Info: The Tanglewood creek trailhead is accessible but the last .5 miles are a bit icy via Park County, CR43. The trail is mostly packed snow with a few dry spots in the first 1 mile. The summit ridge has patches of snow. While I used snow shoes, the trail is well packed out and could be done with micro spikes while the summit ridge can be done without traction devices (MICROspikles). In the afternoon, as it was warm, I was glad to use snow shoes. The day was very warm with 20 mph winds at the summit. I saw only a couple of hikers on the trail. Start 9:30am summit 1:45 pm at car 5:00pm. Pictures taken at 10,400' 2.0 miles in, The summit looking at Mount Evans, and on the Ridge from the summit at 12,700'

Info: I used snowshoes from the car to the saddle and back. The ridge is wind blown and dry. Nice day with no real wind at the summit.

Route: Tanglewood Trl

Info: Snow/ice mix from Rosalie Trl junction turning to moderate snow through the switchbacks. Bare ground at tree line but snow drifts begin to cover trail soon after. Trail disappears a few hundred feet below ridge line with some post-holing near the top. Traction/snow shoes helpful. Moderate sized, isolated snow drifts along summit ridge are easily avoided but require more work to avoid. Summit dome is clear but windy.

Info: Very little snow/ice on the trail. Essentially summer conditions (winds weren't bad at the ridge/summit). Took off traction after a few hundred feet and didn't put it back on again.

Info: The winds kept it interesting above 12500 today. Definitely happy to have a shell and the inner part of my cold weather mitts. It was nice to feel fall and a bite of cold in the air.

Info: Dry-ish, most of the way. The lichen covered rocks were wet/damp and slick. One short snowfield between Epaulet and "Epaulie". Can go around, but was easy enough to cross at a mellow angle, ~20 feet across. I met, "Brad" from, "Summits on the Air." He broadcasts from a peak, twice a week (year around), had an impressive antenna setup and everything. :) Pic #1 - Snowfield - wide snowfield in the middle of the picture Pic #2 - DJ Brad

Info: Pictures of the eastern ridge of Rosalie from Pegmatite. Tanglewood is 50-70% snow covered, very slushy and wet.

Info: Road to Tanglewood Creek TH is clear/dry after this week's winter storm. In the morning, trail was snow covered from the parking lot all the way to the Rosalie Peak summit. Lower section before Wilderness Boundary is melting fast though (no snowshoes required now). Broke trail from Wilderness Boundary to tree line. Snow all the way to the Rosalie/Pegmatite saddle and beyond. Summit has some snow but easy to navigate. Great views of snow covered Mt. Evans/Mt. Bierstadt.

Info: The first two miles in are dry, and then snow until treeline. Lots of postholing, even at 4am, but hopefully the lower temperatures this weekend will fix this problem. The trail is easy to navigate in the daylight, more difficult when it's dark, but if you just follow the creek you should be fine. From the willows to treeline snowshoes were needed both in the morning and on my trek back down. The summit is dry.

Route: Deer Creek TH & Tanglewood Tr
Posted On: 5/12/2019, By: RWinters
Info: Road is clear and passable for 2wd. First mile of trail is mainly clear of snow. I used flotation above 10,400 as there is still plenty of snow. Ridge is crusted and snowshoes we're helpful all the way to the summit. Micro spikes helpful early as well.

Route: Tanglewood creek/bowl

Info: TH is still accessible by AWD/4WD with some clearance, but a little spicy in sections. Frozen in the AM, slush in the PM. No summit and didn't ski the bowl - turned around at 12,200'. But I did get a decent look at the line and it appears to be IN from the summit! We kept skins on up to the ridge and at that point booting was more efficient. Snow coverage for skiing was great until the last mile and a half or so, where some creative skiing and a little poling is needed to stay clipped in.

Info: A stellar bluebird day on Rosalie. Very well packed trail up to treeline. Some may want spikes for a few of the ice flows over the trail, but I pretty easily bypassed them rock hopping. I lost the trail after treeline, but not really an issue, just head for the saddle. Mix of 3-6" snow and bare grass here. From the saddle to the summit a similar mix continues. Pretty easy to stay mostly on bare ground if you wanted from saddle to summit. I brought spikes but never used them, but some may want them. Snowshoes are wayyy overkill until the next storm comes in. Route is in fantastic condition go get it!
