Peak Condition Updates
5/2/2026
Route: Rosalie Group

Info: Summited Rosalie and Epaulie today. There was a lot of snow to start the day (thank you to the groups who broke the trail to treeline!). Above treeline there was a foot of fresh dense, sticky snow. We trenched a path to Rosalie and Epaulie. Epaulie's ridge was dicey with a coating of verglas. We took separate paths down and stuck much further to the right (when descending) which felt much safer. Back below treeline, most snow was melted with much of the trail being muddy and very wet. Bring waterproof shoes if you're planning to hit these up anytime soon!

Info: Dry all the way from Deer Creek TH to summit. Some bits of ice where water crosses trail, but easily avoidable.

Info: I can post pictures late tomorrow, but not at the moment. The word of the day is "ice", no not the government entity, but the solid form of water. It is all over the trail. I have never done Tanglewood Trail before, so I am not sure if that is a common sight. In three or four places the corresponding creeks run over the trail and have iced it over. It is very slick. There was also a lot of ice in on the trail not related to the creeks. It appears due to the large amount of foot traffic on the trail. One technique is to walk along the side of the trail when able. As for above treeline...there is almost no snow. On the South face of the ridgeline...there are pockets...but they are easily avoidable. On the ridgeline proper, there is almost no snow till about 400 feet from the summit...however you can rock hop around it with relative ease. Tuesdays weather dropped only a schiff of snow at the bottom, and roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch higher up (I trenched it for you all...you can thank me later :) ). By the time I hit the ridge most of snow had melted. The exception being near the summit. I never found snow deeper than 8 inches...and it was rare to find anything deeper than 4 inches. The skiff of snow made the ice relatively dangerous...as you could not tell it was a sheet of ice until you stepped on it. Mini-spikes really are not an option unless you want to take them off an put them on 100 times (or maybe you are okay with walking on dirt with mini-spikes...if that is the case they are an option). The peak can be done with easy at the point...roughly October or November conditions.

Info: Well-packed snow and a few ice flows from the trailhead to treeline, with some short, scattered dry spots. Snowier from treeline to the saddle, but generally supportive and what isn't is no more than a foot or so deep. Mainly dry from the saddle to the summit with scattered snow fields up high that are generally avoidable. I used no traction aids until just below the saddle on the descent, then used microspikes all the way back to the car. Windy near the summit, but not nearly as bad as some forecasts called for today, the worst gusts were 25-30mph, and generally a good bit less.

Info: Great conditions today. No snow the first ~1.7 miles, some snow after that but it's only an inch at most until the final mile. Near the summit it was maybe 4 inches at best.

Info: Snow free up to saddle, a couple remaining snowfields between 13,200 and summit. Can connect the dots to avoid most of them if you really try. Trail runners were just fine.

Info: Solid bootpack from the TH to about 2.75 miles in the middle of the switchbacks. I broke trail up to the ridge. I got lost in the woods a few times and sank to my knees despite the snowshoes where I lost the trail.

There was some whumpfing in the snowpack just after breaking treeline on ascent and descent. With the whole route on low-angled slopes and not underneath anything steeper I carried on - but a warning to those traversing steeper slopes in the area.

I left my snowshoes at the saddle as the ridge was mostly dry and didn't bother with crampons for the snowy patches. Beautiful, warm February day.

Info: Other than some mud in the willow crossing at treeline, the whole route is doable without getting your boots wet.

Leaves starting to change; some nice displays along the Tanglewood Trail and visible from the summit.

Great time of year to invest in some bright orange gear if you are lacking any - I saw one hunter coming back to his truck yesterday as I was pulling into the TH. Only saw hikers on the trail and ridge, but safety consciousness is always a good idea.

Info: Starting at the Deer Creek TH, we skinned up the Tanglewood Trail using a nice trench to treeline. From there we gained the ridge and left our skis a little below the summit. We booted the rest and then returned to ski out. Snow was good below treeline, but pretty poor above. We did find some stashes of decent snow, but most of it was blown off from heavy winds.

Info: Climbed Rosalie Peak today from Deer Creek Campground; we parked anywhere from 0.25-0.5 after the campground. At the beginning, there is some boot pack that tapers off. Snow was pretty deep in treeline, and we put in a snowshoe trench around the switchback area. Around 12,000ft the conditions are variable - we encountered everything from major postholing, bulletproof snow, and tundra. We were the only ones who went to the summit today.
