Route: Longs Peak Trail to Battle Mountain Campground
Posted On: 10/20/2019, By: kingshimmers
Info: Below treeline, trail was covered with a few inches of snow. Above treeline, trail alternates between completely windswept, light snow cover, and deep snow drifts. Visibility today was low with strong winds. We only made it to slightly past the turn-off for the Battle Mountain Campground (were headed to Chasm Lake).

Info: Started towards summit at 7am. High winds above treeline until about 10:30am. Many people turned back at the keyhole who started earlier. Route clear of snow to the Keyhole. Some ice/snow on the Ledges and Trough. Used microspikes on these sections but probably still doable without. Narrows and home stretch clear of snow/ice.

Info: Longs was windy, especially at the keyhole but was able to safely pass through and complete the hike. There were a few select icy patches in the Trough but able to avoid. Brought micro spikes but did not use them.

Info: A few fresh inches of snow in the trough. Brought an ice axe and spikes, but didn't use either. Probably a good idea to bring at least spikes, though. Rest of the route was still dry and summer conditions.

Route: Loft Route
Posted On: 9/29/2019, By: RobLowe
Info: Wear traction (either micro spikes or crampons). Recent snow made entering the Loft exit ridge difficult and getting into the exit couloir at clark's arrow more difficult than usual.

In other words, there's just enough snow for there to be a thin layer of ice underneath on rock, but not enough consolidated snow where arresting a fall is likely.

Info: Longs Peak snowy past the Boulder field. Climbed Mt. Lady Washington from Chasm Lake and took a look past the keyhole afterwards. Looked very snowy and was told it was icy and treacherous.

Info: Went up keyhole and down loft. A few minor icy patches to the left of the persistent water fall below the snowfield on loft but not an issue yet. The wind was a blast!

Info: Route in great shape - still summer conditions, but suspect that will change soon due to weather forecast. Really enjoyed the keyhole route minus the trough which is getting in rough shape and is starting to look like the western slopes of Bross/Columbia - pre trail work - suspect it will need some kind of trail improvement done in the future. Beautiful day on the mountain (almost windless) and happy to enjoy some time on the summit to celebrate my 14er finisher!

Info: Started well before sunrise and made it to the top at noon. It was beautiful conditions on the summit; no wind at all and comfortable temperatures! The Keyhole Route is still completely clear. Passed some small patches of ice, but it was easily avoidable.

Info: Route still looking good at the moment. Minimal ice in the normal places in the tough and near the end of the narrows. Dry where it counts. Sorry to the folks that had to deal with my huffing and puffing today. 🤷‍♂️

Route: Loft Route

Info: Hiked the Grand Slam yesterday. Route up the loft straightforward in the dark. Near the top of the loft ice is starting to form. Went directly to Meeker so wasn't an issue. Just a heads up in the weeks to come.

Otherwise, the route is still dry.

Info: Temperatures are cooling off, so this was a bit of a colder ascent requiring warmer clothes (approximately 35 degrees at noon on the summit.) Thin climbing gloves were very advantageous in the cooler temperatures. Very little ice in the trough and narrows, easily avoidable. Very windy at the keyhole, but most of the route had only minor winds.

Info: Route is dry all the way up! Wind conditions same as 9/18, windy in boulderfield, then windy again as you enter the narrows. Windy on top too unfortunately...no sun-tanning for us! If you are camping in the boulderfield, know that there is ample water in the boulderfield stream for filtering, even if the ranger tells you otherwise.

Info: Tiny amounts of snow along the way that didn't come close to impacting the route. Overall, clear and dry the whole way up. Very windy on the tundra as you head for the Boulderfield and on the Boulderfield, but not much after the Keyhole. Big gusts of wind as you entered the narrows, but then calmer again.
