Peak Condition Updates

Route: West Ridge

Info: I did nearby Grizzly Peak today. Obviously, it’s super dry up there, but they did get a few inches of fresh snow in the past few days which made steep and loose travel even harder, even with micro spikes. It ranged from completely dry, to a few inches, two drifts of about a foot.

Info: I don't know if this picture is helpful to anybody trying to seek couloir coverage beta - good, bad, or otherwise. But figured sharing is better than not. ;)

Info: Road to summer trailhead is probably only a few weeks away from being completely accessible. No need for any floatation. No need for traction, other than an ease of mind the first 600' of the south slopes of Grays where the melt freeze has been particularly nasty (or just walk on the exposed rocks next to the trail and you'll move just as fast). Trail seems pretty packed in with a handful of dry spots below 12k. Other than that, if you leave early enough and move fast enough, there was zero risk for post holing. Started 5:30 got back to the car around 10:30.

Info: Did not climb, just observed from the top of Sniktau. While there is some coverage lower down, there's a lot of scree to negotiate up top due to the warm weather. You can just barely see Emperor off to climber's left as well, looking a bit boney.

Route: South Slopes

Info: Summited today. Ascent via Loveland Pass, descent via standard route.

Used spikes along the ascent thru Cupid/Grizzly. Lots of rocks poking through snow along the ridge. A few cornices were starting to form, all easily avoidable. The descent off Grizzly was in good shape, with large dry areas on the saddle to Torreys. More rocky snow to the summit of Torreys. Overall lots of dry patches, plenty of snow to step in as well. It's been the signature this season.

Some posting on the standard route descent through the willows, especially later in the day. We were able to poach some recent snowshoe tracks and keep ourselves mostly afloat. There's a bit of a trench in now.

Info: Drive up to summer trailhead wasn't bad in a stock Toyota Sequoia 4WD, though if I got an inch out of the ruts the snow seemed to want to suck the tires off the road. On the way down, it had softened up and was more concerning that we could get stuck, but going downhill helped for sure. Was good enough I'd do it again under same conditions. We helped a Jeep out of a hidden ditch on the uphill side of the road, with our tow strap (it looked like flat snow right to the trees, until they sunk into it).
Made it to the top. Some new snow on the trail near the top, but not too deep. I used microspikes all the way up; snowshoes would have been ridiculous, no need for them at all. But a few spots on the way up where a fall could possibly send you sliding down a coulior. My friend had YakTrax with crampon spikes, and those were really nice up there. I actually used my ice axe to help myself up in a couple spots getting near the ridge, but I think we stayed too low initially. Getting up on the ridge sooner would have been easier.

Info: Used Peru Creek to access Chihuahua Gulch and picked a safe line from there. Ski's or snowshoes required.

Including pics of Kelso, Grays, and looking back towards Loveland Pass. Still very bare above treeline.

Info: Managed to break trail to the summer trailhead, fairly difficult driving in high clearance 4x4 through some drifts towards the top. Drifts up to a foot deep. Trail up to ridge wasn't bad, no flotation needed. Ridge trail was done in micros and poles and also crampons and axe. Couldn't agree on which was better suited for the day. Crux areas were snowy but not as icy. Down grays trail, drifts in the trail were walkable without much annoyance. Postholing was only shin deep.

Info: Able to drive to the summer trailhead. There's two sections of land mine bottom out style rocks that are kind of annoying. However, I would do it again, drove my Subaru outback.but besides that it was a fine bumpy road with one slick icy spot about five car lengths long. If you choose your line, you can avoid a lot of the 7-in deep holes.

For the hike, I would recommend putting micro spikes on once you hit a little bit above 13,500 when you're ascending the last obstacle to get up to the knife edge, it's kind of icy it's slippery. Also, the entire trail up to Grays and Tori's is just an icy snow drift so micro spikes and poles come in very handy. The rest of kelso Ridge was completely dry

Some snow on the route, but I never considered putting on spikes or crampons.

Info: Kelso Ridge was mostly dry, with some limited pockets of snow/ice which could mostly be avoided with creative routefinding. Knife edge was bone dry. Snow where present was fairly firm, and kicked steps were sufficient to traverse when needed.

Microspikes/poles were useful in a couple areas, crampons and axe are overkill at this point, unless you seek out the snow.

Route: Grays and Torreys

Info: Road in has a few patches of packed snow/ice down low and a bit more within 1mi of the trailhead. Fine in a Rav4.
Trail is mostly clear up to the Kelso turnoff, then it's 50-60% packed snow to the Grays/Torreys split. Then it's pretty much fully packed snow on the trail from there, with the exception of the ridge to Torreys which is pretty much clear. Wore spikes for most of the upper mountain, one could get by without them, by they're definitely very helpful and recommended. No postholing at all, but very windy, and a no skin kinda day.
Kelso Ridge also looked mostly clear from what I saw.

Info: A little bit of snow on Kelso Ridge, but certainly still dry enough - no traction/axe necessary.

We were happy to have microspikes and gaiters from shortly below Torreys summit, over to Grays, and back down to about 12,500. Not 100% necessary, but perfect conditions for cruising down in the spikes.

Route: Kelso Ridge

Info: I ascended Kelso Ridge on the morning of Oct.13 and had generally good traction the entire way to the summit. Although I brought spikes, I did not need them for most of the ascent, although they came in handy on the way down the standard route, which was much icier in places than anything on Kelso Ridge. There are many patches of snow along the ridge, which get deeper close to the summit, but there are still lots of solid rocks that are not snow covered, and finding good foot and hand holds was easy the entire way up to the Knife's Edge. Even though the upper reaches of the ridge had deeper patches of snow, there was little ice along the route and the ridge as a whole was far less slippery than middle reaches of the standard route down, which had a layer of solid ice underneath a fresh coating of snow..
