GEOID2022

Post by CheapCigarMan »

“The National Geodetic Survey is retiring the North American Datum of 1983 and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988.”

“New geodetic-control submissions into the old system stop being accepted after January 13, 2027”

“Every official latitude, longitude and height published in the United States is going to change, by as much as four meters.”

“…..a mountain in Colorado will be exactly as tall.”

The NAPGD2022 datum shift will definitely change elevations when it happens. The shift in Colorado will likely reduce all elevations by about 1m. Link below is a 2024 article that projects the specific datum changes as they affect the 14ers. This is a good summary and has a link to the full study which offers far more detail.

It seems this preliminary study didn’t consider many of the sub peaks or soft ranked peaks that have been in recent discussions.
I see Challenger Point is back on the list. No mention of East Crestone nor West Eolus, for instance.

No risk to the 14er sub-summits - on the list of 73, the lowest peak of those extra 15 is South Bross at 14,020ft, so Sunshine, Huron, and Holy Cross would all loose status before any of the sub-summits would be affected, but there's no indication any of those 3 will change status.

The 5 unranked 14ers that take the 14er count from 53 to 58 (including Challenger) all clear 14k by dozens of feet.

Finally West Eolus is hundreds of feet shy of being a 14er - only it's ranked status (based on summit - saddle) is still within slight mathematical uncertainty, but since summit and saddle will change equally with this update, I don't think it will change. Yes, elevation changes might vary slightly from coast to coast but not from summit to saddle of one peak.

In short - sorry, no new drama here.

The only potential drama is some of the lowest 13ers falling off the list. If all elevations will decrease by about a meter, then we're looking at losing "Peak R" in the Gores, 13,002 in the Sawatch, and 13,003 in the San Juans. Notably, both "peak R" and 13,003 were recent LiDAR promotions, so they may have only been 13ers for a few years...

Also, rot in hell, "Yahoo Mountain"

It's not a new survey, only a recalculation of the old existing spot elevations. East Crestone and West Eolus don't have spot elevations on the topo maps so there's nothing for them (the USGS) to recalculate in those cases. That's up to peak baggers to do themselves, either by LiDAR, survey, or other methods. The USGS isn't going to do it. They haven't updated printed spot elevations for many years.

The LiDAR, surveyed elevations, or interpolated elevations (what's left of them) will have to be adjusted based on the new USGS adjustments, but that's it.

This might be out of date, but for those interested it shows the shift from NAVD88 to NAPGD2022: https://experience.arcgis.com/experienc ... Difference

Using the differences, 13003 is very likely safe (-0.51m), 13002 is probably safe but very close (-0.52m), and Peak R will become a 12er again (-0.53m). If I remember right, LoJ always rounds down so 13002 should just squeak by.

Black Tooth Mountain in WY will probably become a 12er too (-0.85m). CA will lose Vennacher Needle (13001, -0.84m).

The final, official datum will probably differ just a little bit.
Promote West Eolus???

Good riddance, that pile was a poser from day 1. Blessings on its new journey as the state's highest fake 12er.

Yes, this makes sense.
When they said, "...the heights will change..." and then say, "…..a mountain in Colorado will be exactly as tall."
All the peaks will change heights uniformly, both saddle and summit. Keeping the rankings and just the outliers, as you've mentioned, to be potentially affected. Makes sense now.

You're just mad that there's finally a shitty, unranked 13er that's closer to the Denver crowd than you.

Not all of us roll out of bed to time a sweetheart snow-climbing day up a low-quality unranked 13er.
