Looking for SLC partners

Post by benmangelsdorf »

Hello people of 14ers.com \:D/

My name is Ben, and I recently moved from Colorado to Salt Lake City, Utah. I am looking to find some partners for fun times in the outdoors! I am interested in pretty much all outdoor activities, and as of right now I do not have concrete goals in SLC or Utah in general, so I would be down for whatever. Day hikes, multi-day excursions, peakbagging, couloirs, trailruns, desert trips... you name it. I am especially interested in building my mountaineering skills, but I am also heavy in trailrunning right now (I just completed my first 50K, but I am very slow). Eventually I would like to do the WURL, whether that is this summer or a different summer, but that's really my only vague plan in the area.

As far as my background and skills go, I have completed many 14ers including Capitol, Bells Traverse, and Crestone Traverse. I have done a few in winter conditions. I have summited Orizaba unguided, and have made (failed due to poor conditions) attempts on Cayambe and Chimborazo last winter. I have completed a crevasse rescue course. My main sports background is in rock climbing, particularly bouldering, so my climbing technique is quite good, though my technical knowledge of ropes, etc. is not great. I would absolutely be down to share whatever knowledge/skills I have (if anyone is looking for a bouldering coach, let me know  ), and I would be equally excited to learn new skills and techniques from other climbers. My biggest mountaineering dreams are Grand Teton, Denali, and ultimately Alpamayo. I would like to build up my base over the next few years to hopefully inch closer to these dreams!

I work a regular 9 to 5, so I am largely a weekend warrior, but I work remote and can be a bit flexible with timing. I'm very detail focused and safety oriented above all, and I love planning out logistics and studying routes ahead of time. Mostly I just enjoy having fun outside!

I know this is a CO-centered forum for obvious reasons, but I figured I would start looking for partners here since I think I have seen a few people from Utah post on here before. If you are (or even if a buddy of yours is) in the SLC area or Utah in general, let me know!

Hey Ben,
Welcome to SLC! Will send a pm. Your skill set and youth undoubtedly could crush my aging jalopy, but perhaps we could find something common around here to do. Have been interested in finding a partner for south ridge of Superior peak up Little Cottonwood Canyon, plus other stuff. Will be in touch…
