This story deserves its own thread because it's unrelated to the Capitol death gully. It's not so offensive to analyze and criticize when we actually know what happened and when there are no fatalities:

This is just wild speculation, but based on the article, he could've benefited from a sign.

Re: Recent Capitol Rescue
My understanding was the death gully leads down to the north face and that's where the actual danger lies (not the gully itself). So it is related?
In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I know the educators and safety promoters need a figure-head to drive home the preparedness aspect, but this guy isn't it.

The writer misidentified Capitol Lake in the image as well...it's Pierre.

Re: Recent Capitol Rescue
Wow. I figured he was like 50' down the K2 gully and got stuck. He went down 700' and back up?!
Re: Recent Capitol Rescue
Here's what Bill has added to the route description on this 14'ers.com website:
HOLD ON! This is the most-difficult of the standard 14er routes; It's long, tedious and dangerous. Climbers have died here, including 5 in the Summer of 2017 so don't take it lightly, don't go if you don't have solid Class 3/4 climb skills and don't go just to check this mountain off your list. It's a serious climb and we want you to make it back safely. - Bill Middlebrook

Wow...that was painful to read. I don't know what to say without sounding like a jerk...let's just say some people should maybe consider a different pastime than climbing mountains.

Could not have said it better myself.

Re: Recent Capitol Rescue
He mentions in the article, not needing ropes on standard 14er routes; and not knowing rope work. While, technically, that is true.
But, if you do not know how to climb 5+ (presumably by rope), then on class 4 terrain - with difficult route finding - you have no room for error. My point being, do not discount the advantage of having rock skills on the 14ers.
