Oh no... Kelso Ridge is a fun winter adventure but can accrue some nasty cornices when it gets windy. Had to be a hardy group to try it with these cold temps. Really sad news, but kudos to the alpine rescue team. Amazing people.

RIP to the fallen hiker and a speedy recovery to the rescued hikers. This is a sad reminder, but Grays & Torreys ARE NOT a good and safe winter route for beginners. There was a fatal accident in the same area a decade ago. Those who are new to the back country in Colorado in winter should never be on those peaks. While we have no way of knowing the experience level of the group, there are many other safer options in the Front Range. This was an established slide path that has killed before.

Sounds like beacons saved one life but unfortunately, not the other member who was trapped. My condolences to friends and family of the deceased.

Edit: Later reports revealed that only one climber was trapped in the slide.

Do you have information on which slide path it was that went? I'm unable to find any on the local news outlets...

Wow, I noticed that slope a few weeks ago. It was heavily drifted and looked sketchy, so I escorted our dogs down below the summer trail into the willows area to stay away from it. I figured I was being conservative but the wind had been harsh (this was the first week of December). Also, the slide isn't on Kelso Ridge it's Kelso Mountain.

IF the TV report is correct and they were at or near 12,000 ft, I'm assuming they were on the main trail and the av was in the same area as 2005 photo.

SH!T. And there was just that recent thread describing the potential danger in the G/T area.

Looks like they were following the SUMMER trail.

Remember, SUMMER trails may cross through avalanche terrain. In WINTER you do not have to follow SUMMER trails....

BTW, I worked on the December 22, 2005 fatal accident in the same location, when I worked for CAIC.
