Good beta sites for Wasatch?
Quick question, does anyone have any good websites for the Wasatch range in Utah? I'm looking at maybe doing a trip and hitting some of the Salt Lake skyline peaks. Thanks in advance.

Chi Transplant did a solid write up of that region last summer. Here is some info of what he came up with -

When I hiked in that region, I utilized a book. Hiking in the Wasache was the title, it was quite helpful, not as much info as this site, but it was a good start. Enjoy the region, I really liked it! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Re: Good beta sites for Wasatch?
The Wasatch is the yin to the 14ers.com yang - the info is delightfully dispersed, rewarding only the most persistent researchers. Summitpost offers a broad overview on all the peaks in the SLC skyline but the route information is often cursory or incomplete. That's half the fun. The routes are mostly short but steep, so it's hard to get too off-track so long as you're going up. Look for "Wasatch Eleveners" by Randy Winters - I picked up my copy at REI while I still lived in CO.

Re: Good beta sites for Wasatch?
For hiking the Central Wasatch peaks, this is a good resource:
http://www.willhiteweb.com/utah_climbin ... al_304.htm
This one is amazing (incredible photos) for Utah and a lot of other western states:
http://www.mountainalbum.com/marauders/ ... satch.html
And my site is slowly but surely building up some info on the region:
http://wasatchandbeyond.blogspot.com/
I'll second/third the book recommendations above... and also add that if skiing is what you're after, the 3 part "Wasatch Tours" series (specifically volume 2 & 3) is what you want.
I'd be happy to answer any questions and shoot some ideas your way if you want.

Re: Good beta sites for Wasatch?
Wow, thanks for the info! Gonna take me some time to sort through it all. Mainly and most immediately I'm looking at the 'front range' of Salt Lake. I've been visiting Salt Lake for my whole life to see my extended family in West Valley City and I've always been so impressed with the sudden heights of the three or four peaks right there (Mt. Olympus, Twin peaks and Pfefferhorn I think? Can anyone name them from North to South for me?) so I thought, why not plan a few hiking days the next time I'm out there to visit. I'm thinking summer/fall so no skiing. But this is cool! Thanks for the info everyone.

Heading south from where I-80 passes through Parleys Canyon, the most prominent peaks you would see on the SLC skyline are Grandeur Peak, Mt Olympus, Salt Lake Twins, Thunder Ridge and Lone Peak. Grandeur is a simple hike, the rest require scrambling. Lone Peak is my favorite of the bunch but it is a pretty strenuous undertaking with some tricky route-finding in spots.

Re: Good beta sites for Wasatch?
Olympus has an awesome view, and it's one of my favorites, but it can be more difficult than it looks because it's steep and there's no shade. Take note of where you start scrambling up the rocks as you go up the last few hundred yards to the summit- there are many, many SAR calls for people that go off the summit too early and get cliffed out.
I'm always a fan of the Pfiefferhorn, and last summer I hiked American Forks Twin Peaks at Snowbird. I didn't see another person until I traversed over to Hidden Peak, where the tram goes. It was seriously the most amazing view of the Wasatch I've ever seen, and I highly recommend it. Summitpost has good info for both of these hikes.
You will almost always see mountain goats on Broads Fork Twin Peaks, Dromedary, or Superior. For some reason I see them more frequently on these peaks on the Big Cottonwood/Little Cottonwood ridgeline.
If you come in July, you should try to time it with the wildflower festival. It's super fun.

Re: Good beta sites for Wasatch?
Unfamiliar with the backcountry scene, but any of you SLC-ers ski Superior via any of the south facing lines? Any recomendations as to which line you prefer? Seems like there are a few options and my only frame of reference is summitpost. I couldn't stop staring at that face last trip to Alta (when it wasn't dumping and I could see across the canyon) so I figured I'd give it a whirl next time in the area and bring both pairs of planks.
