Re: Conditions on the Loft?
Funny you should ask - I went up Longs that way today (down the Keyhole).
Of course there's still tons of snow everywhere. There's lots of snow on the
Longs Peak trail. It's 100% snow from the Chasm Lake cabin to the Loft.
This morning the peak was socked in & windy, so everything was frozen.
You could ascend direct to the Loft on snow (thru the headwall), but I
didn't because the snow was too firm for my comfort with running shoes
and Kahtoolas. I wasn't sure I wouldn't get blown off the Loft! The escape
ledge was snow covered as well. All frozen. Good styrofoam snow up high,
great cramponing. Clark's Arrow is clear of snow & you will have some
rock sections in the back side there before you get to the lower Homestretch.
The Homestretch is still snow to the summit. Keyhole is basically all snow
from the Keyhole to the summit except a couple sections of rock on the
Ledges & Narrows. No view up there this morning, but plenty of wind!
Everything is well tracked & there are kicked steps on the entire route
(Loft & Keyhole). PB
