Elbert or San Luis 5/31?

Post by James Scott »

I'm itching to get above timberline, and looking at the Southeast Ridge of Elbert. Has anyone driven down 82 or around Twin Lakes and seen how much snow I'll be dealing with? A lot of that route is atop a ridge and it is south facing, so I'm thinking it might be a decent early season climb. My second choice would be San Luis, but I'm assuming that has more snow than Elbert. Anyone know anything about these for this weekend?

I was on San Luis last weekend (Willow Creek side), but had my head down low the whole time and didn't get eyes on the Stewart Creek route much. Plenty of snow in the basins, mostly clear on the ridgelines. If there hasn't been a good freeze this week, my prediction for the Willow Creek route is ugliness, it sure was for me.

Photo from under the hoodoos looking back across the second basin on the Willow Creek route.
