Thinking of doing a sunrise summit this upcoming weekend if anyone is interested. I'll be going with a friend with no experience in hiking so we'll probably be going slow.

Do you not like this friend very much?

I get the cool-sunrise-from-the-summit thing. What I don't get is the taking-someone-with-no-hiking-experience-to-14,000-feet-in-the-dark-on-frozen-snow thing.

well he was raised here in Colorado so he has been out hiking. Just never to a 14er but your comment makes sense. Maybe will ask him to wait until summer to join me in a sunrise summit.

I'm thinking about a DeCaLiBron this Saturday with a buddy. Anybody know how much snow is up there? Anybody want to join? I'd be driving from Denver pretty early (be at the TH by 7ish)

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've been pondering a more interesting way to get that entire group I'd like to try:

From Montgomery reservoir, ascend Democrat's class 3 north ridge, traverse to cameron, then to bross, back to cameron, over to Lincoln, and then down the Lincoln amphitheater back to the TH. Could potentially turn the descent into a glissade down the amphitheater (anyone know if this is possible?) or down Lincoln's north Couloirs (again, anyone know if this is possible?).

Would anyone be interested in this combo?
- A mountain is not a checkbox to be ticked
- Alpinism and mountaineering are not restricted to 14,000 foot mountains
- Judgment and experience are the two most important pieces of gear you own
- Being honest to yourself and others about your abilities is a characteristic of experienced climbers
- Courage cannot be bought at REI or carried with you in your rucksack

I climbed all except for Dem on the 23rd. Road is drifted over a few hundred feet from the tin building at the Sweet Home mine. Hike on road is a mile plus to Kite Lake. Snow was continuous from Kite Lake to near top of Bross using the S gulley. Snowshoes will come in handy when crossing the Kite Lake basin after noon. I was postholing to knees consistently, sometimes to thigh. For some reason I suffered through the postholing with snowshoes carried over three fourteeners still strapped to my pack. I kind of felt bad for not getting Democrat (noon turnaround, should've started earlier) and wanted to suffer a little more.

I recommend starting as early as you possibly can. I wish I started at 5 AM. I started at 6:30. Good luck on the climb.
