Grays Peak car camping?

Post by mikgoesoutside »

Hey all!
Planning on my first solo 14ers next week bagging G+T but I’ve got a few questions:

I was thinking about getting to the trailhead late the night before and taking a nap in the car until about 2:30am so I can get a sunrise summit. I know there’s dispersed camping but I don’t have a tent (and the car is much comfier lol) is that okay? And would you have any hesitation driving the bumpy road at night? Not worried about clearance or 4wd, more worried about it being just tough to navigate in the dark.
My avg pace for south boulder peak, similar mileage and slightly less vert, was 27min/mi. I expect to be a quite a bit slower with altitude, but do you think a 2:30/3am start is good to reach grays for sunrise?

Good Plan -

I do G & T regularly but usually arrive at the trailhead at ~6pm the night before
and sleep in the parking lot (in my camper)

I ALWAYS enjoy the sunrise on the hike up!
