Women’s Self-Supported 14er FKT

Hey 14ers.com community,

I’m not usually the most active on this forum, but I’m coming on here to announce that this July I plan on attempting to set a women’s self-supported 14er speed record. The self-supported nature of this record means that I will not be allowed crew/ pacers and will be responsible for driving myself between trailheads and squeezing in food/ sleep in between. I have already begun to map out the logistics, gather support from sponsors, and train for high vert days. I have not decided on a start date, but it will most likely be mid-late July depending on weather and conditions.

I’m wondering if anybody has a Culebra reservation that they might be willing to sell? I have a couple other connections who will most likely be able to get me access to the land, but a reservation as backup would be helpful. I have a history with Cielo Vista ranch and they do not like me to say the least, so there’s no guarantee even a reservation would work. Plus, I have an ethical dilemma with charging people $150 to walk up a hill and some of the other practices they engage in on the property. Any recs of what I should do? I feel obligated to climb Culebra for the purposes of keeping the record consistent, but I’m mostly doing this for myself and to see how fast I can climb them all in a self-supported fashion.

You can search her name on Google. She got caught trespassing and was facing charges. I don't see a reference to the outcome though.

Out curiosity, you have a problem with the ranch charging you 150 but you're okay with reimbursing somebody else after they've paid 150 for a ticket they're not going to use because a member of their party dropped down? Or are you asking somebody on here to buy you a ticket? Wouldn't either of these be indications of you being supported by somebody else?

Within the past three or four years there was someone who managed to hike culebra from the north. They got a pretty hefty ticket for trespassing afterwards, but they were able to tag the summit. They say don't do their crime if you can't do the time. But if you can...

If you want to hike Culebra as part of your FKT attempt, my advice is to contact the ranch and be honest about it. Since the person hiking Culebra has to be the one who signs the liability waiver, you don't really have another option and it would be unethical to climb it using someone else's permit. Maybe apologize to them (if there is something to apologize for) and tell them you'd like to do it right. If you want to hike Culebra legally, it costs $150 to the ranch as part of a reservation. It's that simple.

Seems like the majority of the14er community would agree on not trespassing Culebra for the self supported 14er record, as your record would most likely be discounted by the “fkt” site, from what I am aware of. If you can’t get legal access, or an email of access or what not like others have done for Lindsey and Decalibron , to save yourself grief from the community, and respect, I would just skip it. If it really is for yourself, then who cares?

Question for the FKT purists out there... how much help can a hiker receive to gain access to Culebra during a self-supported FKT?

I think paying someone that has ticket for C, should be OK. It's like paying for grocery or pizza delivery, right?
But not paying, or having someone else pay for the ticket is definitely being supported.

Sometimes less information is more. Maybe too much info shared here. I feel like more eyes will be on how she exactly gains access now.. or at least on hyper watch to make sure she does it legally….

I do have a problem with them charging $150 as a barrier to entry. I have said the only reason I would ever pay is to set the speed record. Reservations are all booked.

Best of luck with the permit! I'm sure you've considered all contingencies, but I'll add that climbing the next highest on the list might be something to consider if all else fails.
