Yeah, there's a GUI for las2las which is nice. Here's where I got las2las from: I downloaded lastools from rapidlasso.com. This page states that the survey foot is being phased out, so does it make sense for this community's use-case?

Yep, I read that too. It sounds like it'll be phased out sometime this year, which coincidentally is also when the new datum should be nearing completion. As for datums/geoids, we might as well use what we currently have (GEOID12/12A/12B and GEOID18). For survey feet vs international feet for elevations, that's probably a detail that doesn't matter too much for our purposes. Palomino Mtn quad: Peak 12340 (interpolated) near Sugarloaf. There is another point with a surveyed elevation of 12338 about .5 miles northeast that could actually be the summit?

I'm still in the honeymoon phase with this data, astonished at the level of detail.
Take a look at this side-by-side comparison of Quail Mountain's summit... You can see a trail, the depression of an old mine, mining shack remains, the large summit cairn!

Hey Ben, can you do a major check of an entire area for me? Whiley reminded me that there's a peak in between "V 9" and San Miguel Peak that, while it may not be ranked, it stands out so much that I wonder if maps of the area are wrong. That said, it will require analysis of an entire ridge. I have approximately half a dozen photos of the ridge from different angles including "V 9", Lake Hope, 13,300 D, and an area far north of the lake, but the ridge is so complex that even when I added colored markers to the photos I still don't know what I'm looking at. I can upload the annotated photos but ultimately it's kind of irrelevant, I think the entire ridge needs to be analyzed starting at San Miguel Peak, going southeast to Point 13,400 (the tri-point of San Miguel, Dolores, and San Juan counties), across to 13,269 (so labeled on Forest Service maps), to "V 9". The point I'm most interested in is 13,269 (red circle in the photos and on the map) which I think has significantly more prominence than shown on maps.
Whiley also wants a check of "V 9"'s west-southwest sub-summit (blue circle), since it appears to be of nearly identical elevation to the currently accepted summit of "V 9" (orange circle).
