Choo Choos

Post by highpilgrim »

I have to admit to liking trains and have since I was a kid. I lived in Colorado years ago in the Breckenridge area and got hooked on the Railroad and Mining History of the Colorado Mountains. One of the many great Narrow Gauge Railroads was the Denver, South Park and Pacific (DS&P) which later became the Colorado and Southern (C&S).

An important point on that line was in South Park at Como. Como was a major division point and maintenance facility, centered upon the roundhouse and turntable that remains to this day. Built in the 1880s, it was originally a six stall engine house, and was later added to extensively with additional wood construction to increase capacity. The wood structure was demolished and in some part burned leaving only the original structure intact.

I have been visiting this structure for 40 years and enjoyed it immensely but just expected it eventually to fade with the rest of the Railroad and Mineral Mining History of the state.

Imagine my shock and surprise when I visited last week and found this: a completely rebuilt and operational turntable and newly renovated Como Depot!

A little further research yielded these:

I will post some more pictures of this area and if there is any interest will continue to do so. I know it's not mountaineering but to me is part of this fantastic state and its history. Sorry in advance if it doesn't toot your whistle.

Btw, the leaf porn lovers among us better get ready; aspens are well on their way turning in the South Park area.

Great information HighPilgrim. I will try to check out the turnstyle next time I am travelling near Como. I have always been interested in the Argentine Central RR that took tourists to the top of McClellan Mtn for a view of Grays and Torreys. I have found minimal info on it at the Denver Public Library but do you have any history on it by chance?

I've hiked that railroad grade years ago. I only know a little about the Argentine Central but this might help, if you're inclined to pay for it.

HP,

So I'm confused. I was well aware of the turntable at Como, but they have a functioning locomotive as well?? Where does it go to/fro? Or is it a replica? Pretty cool, regardless.

Wow, I've been through Como many many times and have never seen it before. Guess I need to stop blasting through there going 70mph.

Come on up and check out the model railroad museum up in Greeley sometime (and drink beer at Weldwerks - which is fabulous). They simulated a logging town in the Pacific Northwest (some Oregon town). It is pretty mind blowing.

Tom,

It is completely operational. They bought an old narrow gauge steam loco from the White Pass and Yukon RR and shipped it to the Union Pacific Shops in Cheyenne, WY for rebuild. It has been delivered and is operating in Como.

They intend to lay more track but I'm not sure of the extents they are planning. One way or the other, it is really cool to see the steam return to South Park.

Dave,

Beers and Choo Choos works for me, anytime. Btw, there is a large model railroad in the upper level of the Old Courthouse in Buena Vista that is fun to see.

Thanks for posting that Highpilgrim, very cool to see the restoration of that turntable. Amazing how easy it was to turn that locomotive around on that well balanced turntable. Incredible work. There is a roundhouse in the Springs on Hwy 24 and 30th from the Colorado Midland RR. It used to be a pottery company for many years (Van Briggle), but I believe it is a brewery among other things today. If you have more pictures, do post more. Great to look back into the past!

My son did a report on the Denver and New Orleans RR many years ago, so this had re-awakened a fondness for trains and the RR history of Colorado. There was even a RR model club here in Parker for many, many years on Pikes Peak of the same name. Sadly they closed recently. My son and I had a ball recreating a famous picture of the RR station in Parker. That station was still here as late as the 60's, but the parker fire dept burned it down to practice putting out fires, what a tradgedy! There is still a very short piece of the grade remaining behind the Pace Center where it crossed Sulphur Gulch. The RR operated from 1881 to 1936 under many RR names including the Colorado and Southern. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Yes, I was impressed that it took very little manpower to move that thing like they did.

Here's one more that I had time to piece together.

Riding the old RR grade from Pitkin up to the Alpine Tunnel is a good one: https://14erskiers.com/blog/2014/09/alp ... p-9-13-14/
