With all due respect for Matt, not many follow these rules - you can think of them as an artifact from a different time before the NFS shut down the original runnings of the route. They're also poorly written, and the source of much confusion. I think they're also outdated - is there a Blanks Cabin TH anymore? I don't believe the parking lot is there to access. I believe also that Matt says basically the same thing, and to just do it however you want. It's not very active curation of the challenge.

Sure, but pacing is very clearly outside of the original intent of how Nolan's was conceived. Precedent is definitely important in these things. I'd say if someone does the route with pacers, or if they finish over 60hr, they have done the Nolan's course, but not Nolan's. A small but significant distinction.

I think the "pacer" logic is faulty because there are attempts/finishers that did it together. Are we supposed to assume they didn't push and pace each other? No one may care as much about the rules as other FKT's but I think the route finding is probably the most impressive thing. Just how these guys and others are able to navigate at night in many cases "off trail" is amazing to watch. Last year, showed again how important that is and that one lapse in judgement can derail the whole attempt.

I'm going to have to ask Blake Wood about this next time I see him. I don't think they ever made a "rule" about entrants in Nolan's not collaborating & traveling together. That's different from having pacers. For example, at Barkley you can travel together for the first 4 laps, but not for the 5th (actually, if 3 people finished lap 4 together I guess 2 of them could do the 5th together). Other than that, I'm not aware of an event that prevents entrants from traveling together, while many disallow pacers. Nolan's is a "thing" which is different from the Nolan's course - it has a time limit and other "rules".

It's a Sun Runner Cap by Outdoor Research. Had mine for years and OR's warranty is legit. They have a Radar version too where the sides stow in the cap.
