Memorial Day Weekend options

Post by usfgal »

My husband and I are planning to do some 14ers over Memorial Day weekend, and we're trying to figure out the best options. We have snow shoes, but we don't want to take them if we don't need them. We're tentatively thinking of maybe La Plata and the Lincoln Group, although we're also considering a few others. I didn't see any TRs from this past weekend on these peaks. Does anyone have any idea how much snow we'll encounter (i.e., enough to warrant snow shoes)? Generally speaking, which peaks tend to have the fastest snow melt? Thanks!

usfgal,

Here is a report on a failed attempt on La Plata from last weekend: http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/triprepor ... ki=Include Just comparing pictures from the La Plata report and a trip report from Lincoln, Democrat, and Bross on 5/8, I would say the Lincoln group would be your best bet...

FYI, the fastest snowmelt usually happens on peaks such as Evans/Bierdstat, Grays/Torreys, Sherman, and the Lincoln group...

Happy Trails!

I climbed Bross, Lincoln, and Cameron on Sunday the 23rd. I was on near continuous snow from just below Kite Lake, across the three summits, and back. Bring snowshoes for the trek across the Kite Lake basin after noon. I used crampons for the ascent of Bross (S-gulley) and the short traverse across the NE slope of Cameron on my way to Lincoln. I booted it from Lincoln, across Cameron, down the saddle with Democrat, and then back to camp below the Sweet Home mine.
