The Mosquito Range is well known for its rare flora, and several rare plant species were located during recent botanical surveys on the flanks of Mt. Democrat. In fact, eight species of rare plants—some of which are imperiled and vulnerable in the state and vulnerable and threatened throughout their global ranges—were found in the Kite Lake Basin. Data collected in CFI's Sustainable Trails Program inventory has documented the needs for trail structures to be installed adjacent to sensitive plant species so hikers don't wander onto tundra in crucial locations. The work done by CFI and RMYC will directly address 1,986 cubic feet of erosion and 995 linear feet of braiding in the area.
