Trailhead

Take Colorado 69 south from Westcliffe. Drive 4.5 miles and turn right on Colfax Lane. Drive 5.5 miles to the end of Colfax. Turn right and drive 1 mile to a junction. This is usually the location of the winter closure. Continue straight up the 120 Road for 0.3 mile to the Lower 2WD trailhead. In summer, good-clearance 4WD vehicles can continue an additional 2.5 miles to the Rainbow Trail Junction (signed). This is the "trailhead."

Route Description

Marble Mountain is a great hike in all seasons and is one of the few Sangres 13ers with fairly easy access in winter.  1 is the view of Marble from the lower, 2wd parking area on the South Colony Lakes road. From your parking spot on the road, continue to the intersection of the Rainbow Trail -  2. Leave the road and hike northeast up the Rainbow Trail -  3.

Upon reaching the ridge crest, look for the Marble trail on the right -  4. Leave the main trail and continue southwest up the ridge. Staying on the ridge crest, follow the trail ( 5) through blown-down trees to reach the top of a 10,725-foot point -  6. Descend a bit and continue along the ridge ridge to exit the forest, above 11,500' -  7. The trail pretty much ends here but the route is fairly straightforward - stay right and stick to the ridge.

Ascend west to reach the edge of Marble's northeast ridge ( 8) and continue ( 9,  10,  11 and  12) to a flat area, near 12,200' -  13. Continue up the ridge ( 14,  15 and  16) to reach the summit where you'll find excellent views of the surrounding peaks, including the some 14ers -  17 and  18.
