Infamous winds of the Mosquito range.
Full report here. Another attempt on a Mosquito range mountain thwarted by winds. I don't know why I keep trying these mountains in winter, they're brutal. Anyway we had 46 mile per hour winds at 13k where we decided to turn back. We still did over 8 and a half miles on this trip and gained 2,600 feet. Not bad for not getting within 2.5 miles of the summit.

Papillon	The proof is in the pudding.. 1/17/2011 12:35am Glad to see somebody talking about wind speed on this site and backing it up. I'm curious as to your route selection, however. It seems like hiking up beyond the Sweet Home Mine and then fish-hooking left will get you onto some windblown slopes below Loveland. That route would've gone a few weeks back (at least to Loveland) but my partner and I were crushed by the winds and had to turn around in the low 12s. Cooper did a write-up about this route (an expansion of Roach's description) for The Denver Post last April. I think we're going back this coming Saturday for another dose...
CO Native	Route selection 1/17/2011 3:28am Our route selection was based on two things. We wanted nearly zero avy risk. Got that. And we wanted 2wd accessible trailhead. Got that. Could we have chosen a better one that met both criteria probably, but it was still a fun route though the ridge is very deceiving about when you'll top out. If I were to do it again I'd start at the Buckskin Joe mine and gain the ridge from there. Part of the fun of this trip was taking a route I had no information on. A fun change from most 14er routes that I can find an excess of info on any route.
sgladbach	46MPH would turn me around to... 1/17/2011 3:54pm But 45.9 mph? :? I like your route choice (when your socks aren't being blown off!) The point of climbing mountains is to get above timberline; you are maximizing that pleasure. Otherwise, one should snowshoe the Colorado Trail into Uncle Bud's hut!
