Place:Greyrock Route:Barfy's Favorite (5.7+) with variation Players:Joe, John (Johnba)
The upper part of our route
Greyrock is a staple peak in Larimer County. This huge granite formation towers 500 feet above the meadow below, offering nearly 100 established routes of all grades. About two and a half miles of hiking brings you to the rock itself. The southeast section of the rock offers routes from 5.4 to the 5.11 range, most being around 5.7 to 5.9. If you're looking for great moderate routes with a slight approch, this is your spot.
Joe and I had bailed on an attempted of this route a few months prior. Rain caused us to rap off from our second belay station before we could finish. Some of these photos are from the fist attempt.
So with the hour and a half approach we geared up and hit the rock around 11 am. The first move to enter the crack was one of the hardest moves all day. Fun crack, fairly steep (5.7). Joe led P1.

I followed up to the belay station set at a small tree/bush.

Not wanting to follow our previous attempts route we jogged right (east) and headed up small cracks at low angle (5.6). I led P2

I set an anchor on a small ledge and brought up Joe.
We swapped gear and Joe started up our next route. We were off Barfy's Favorite by now and were heading into unknown territory.

The plan was to belay at whatever we could find. But, as Joe progressed he found poor placements and sections of run out. With no spot for an ample belay, Joe continued up over some of the tougher terrain of the day with sparse gear placements. Eventually he found a ledge, set up anchor and waited for me. Pitch 3 offered some of the best and toughest moves of the day.

One more small pitch with easy slab climbing led to the top. Descended via the trail and walked out. Very cool climb and rewarding as usual. REVENGE WAS OURS!

Just another reason to live in Ft.Fun. Nothing like a day out in the Poudre, playing around in the Greyrock region, grabbing a pint at Coopersmith's, playing a couple rounds of ping-pong and getting a sweet pork enchilada at Mexicali Cafe along with a marg at the Rio.
...who is from Ft. Fun introduced me to some of the treasures in that town, including the trail to the top of Greyrock. Great area - great rock. I don't (yet) rock climb, but reports like this get me closer and closer to trying. Thanks.
