The Green Wall route |
I left Grand Junction at 2:30 am en route to Maroon Lake. I arrived at the overflow parking lot at about 5 am and originally planning a solo on pyramid I ran into dmathis in the maroon parking lot looking for a hiking partner. I was more than happy to run into someone interested in the same class 4 peak. Having done the Bells I was quite eager to attempt the most technical of the 3. We hiked and climbed and reached the summit around 10:15ish. We descended and got at exactly 3 pm.
Here is the important stuff!
Notes:
* The big CAIRN on the crater lake trail is pretty obvious, and there is a second chance trail a closer to crater lake.
*The trail to the ampitheater is really obvious and really well condition. The CFI did good work.
* Ampitheater is similar to N. Maroon's rock glacier. The second half is a roller coaster ride to the 1000 ft. slope.
* The 1000 ft. slope is made of much loose dirt/mud. It isn't too bad.
*The Pyramid leap of faith is way overhyped and I refuse to call it an actual leap of faith haha
*Ledge traverse is pretty simple and straight foward.
* The Green Wall is most intense at it's entrance, The right side (entrance) might be class 4 while the left has more loose rocks and is a class 3 start. Most of the work is simple climbing on a wall with solid hand/foot hold but has loose rocks. Leave at obvious cairns on the left.
*Post Green wall- Expect a well marked route with all strictly class 3 climbing and an occassional class 4 crux. Don't let the term class 4 intimidate you but be cautious and check every hand and foot hold like you would on a class 3 move.
*Follow a well marked route to a rewarding summit.
* Beware the mountain goats
*Bring treking poles and helmets, etc.
*When returning to the valley floor, cautiously be aware of the trail junction between the two pyramid cairned trails. Missing your correct turnoff will cost you extra distances.
