First Fourteener - Camping on the Summit of Sneffels |
I will never forget this -
I had just gotten back from a four month stay in Pokhara, doing some religious stuff (living in a cave with some Sadhus a few miles away from Annapurna's BC) and one of my friends had come to me asking if I'd wanted to climb a fourteener with him that weekend. I didn't really know anything about mountain climbing, but figured after the Everest BC trek, and my stay at around 15,000 feet with the Sadhus, I'd be alright...
Well, to put it this way, we got to the trailhead at about six at night. He packed my bag (or rather, his bag) with stuff - about twenty to fourty pounds, for me to carry (he had a much larger bag, by the way) and we took off. After a many hours, around six, of the most absolutly grueling climbing I've ever done in my life, we reached summit (or rather, something maybe 40 feet below the summit) at 11pm. My friend set up his tent, and we went to bed.
The next morning we woke up at around five, climbed the last few feet, and watched the sunrise. Anyway, I did it, and now I've got ten more under my belt.
