It's official---Wetterhorn is my favorite peak----the necessary attention required to get up and down this peak is exciting as well as rewarding. I began my hike at 5am from Matterhorn TH,signed in and began my travel up a very beautiful valley that follows Matterhorn Creek until the Ridge Stock cutoff.
The trail goes thru the trees and emptys into an upper basin that first reveal Wetterhorn. After crossing a few runoff/creeks, your confronted with the boulder field section that
ascends to the ridge containing the rust colored patch of dirt. Beyond that dirt,you begin the route choices, I say choices because regardless of your choice you will eventually find yourself confronted with rock ribs as described in Bills route description. Here is where my attention got serious!
Hand and foot placement vital. Climbing up and over,up and over. Solid rock,never knocked any down.
After a brief few minutes on a super summit,the hand and foot placement again became paramont. Down and over,down and over,thru the crossover point,then down and over some more until reaching the rust colored dirt.
The hike back thu the rock field seemed to be never ending cause I was getting worn. 5 hours up,1/2hr on summit and 4 hrs down my new favorite!!
