What else can slow me down? |
I arrived at the TH on Friday early enough to hike up the trail away just to scope it out but late enough to experience an afternoon rain shower while out. Fortunately I wasn't up the trail to far and was able to return to my car semi dry.
The plan was to get an early start the next morn , so plenty of rest was in order due to rainy conditions (that I got ). An 4am begining with headlamp cause I knew I wanted to get down before early afternoon showers on Saturday.
I hiked steady and slow ,as usual, and kept the lamp on until about 5:30 am and continued up the trail while enjoying the early morn sunrise. Up and up until I came to the point where you pass over to the other side (at the top of snowfield that you go under). This is where I made my error that cost about an hour and a bunch of energy. I miss understood a tip I was given Friday at the TH and tried to ascend directly up from there. I began up this semi short cleft and found myself in a real tough situation. The rock was very loose and once I grabbed a rock above my head and it fell onto my right foot doing some damage. I then spent time trying to get down out of this position cause I couldn't go any further up and I was hurt.
Once out of this spot,I continued back on the trail to the area near the steep scree and identified the spot I should have gone up.(limping abit but afraid to remove my boot) This really slowed my ascent but I continued on to the summit.
After a brief time on the summit I figured I better get down and I was sure I'd be even slower than my usual pace (and I was). Hiker after hiker asked of my foot condition an the way down and I mooched about 2 thousand mg, of Ibup. from helpful fellow hikers---thanks to all---today my foot has swelled some but another peak and adventure complete!
