Failed attempt at first 14er - Grays
After weeks of planning and prep today was the day... hit the trailhead early and parked about .3 mile up the road from the winter trailhead. The weather was nice at this point, and once I figured out I couldn't hike the road as fast as I normally go, I made decent time up to the summer trailhead. Being my first attempt ever at a 14er, I was excited to see the bridge come into view and anxious to get up the trail.

The snow was falling pretty hard by this time, but I figured I'd keep going for awhile and see how it went. It wasn't long before I gained a whole new respect for those of you who climb all the time and have sumitted several of these beauties.

I made it up to about 11,000 feet (maybe a 1/2 mile or so up the actual trail. Even in snow shoes I was post-holing to my waist over and over. finally finding some hard pack after a few hundred feet, I resumed the ascent - By the time I got up to 11,500 I felt like I had been beaten by Tyson... Around this time the wind started to blow hard enough to make the snow sting. Conditions were quickly deteriorating and were beginning to approach white out. At about 12,200 feet my butt had been thoroughly kicked between the wind, snow, altitude and 20 years of smoking I had had enough and headed back down.

I have not given up on gaining a summit, it just wasn't in the cards today, but the mountain will be there tomorrow.

Now to go hit the treadmill for some way more intense cardio to get ready for the next attempt... well after this morning maybe that can wait till tomorrow.

Took lots of pics, but nothing that would likely be useful to anyone, more just souvenir type stuff.

Happy Climbing

There are no failed hikes(*). At least you got out there and were able to enjoy the day! Congrats on the first of hopefully many 14er hikes.

(*) Unless you die or are crippled, I suppose. That would suck.

Like you said the mountain will be there next time. It took me 3 attempts to summit Grays in winter. But when i did it was awesome.

You should post your pics anyway. People are always curious to see the trail head and the road up to it.

Post-holing sucks, but think how much easier it will feel this summer when you‘re on solid ground and not dealing with the winter-like elements. Hopefully the weather will be great for your first successful 14er!
