 Perfect Conditions on Little Bear
Little Bear 6/13/09

Having moved from the San Juans to the Sangres I met my friend Tyson at the Lake Como turn off and we headed straight up the gnarly Lake Como road in my 4-runner. This time I shattered my old record by reaching 8770 before stashing the vehicle. It was a minor blow to my ego to see a car at 10,000 feet (Xterra). We started walking and took a break at the cabins on the way up

. When we got to the lake we were greeted by a beautiful view of Little Bear

As the weather forecast was good we decided to tackle LB first. We started at 4am on the 13th and were on top at 8am. The approach chute was very firm early and very sloppy coming down. The traverse had no snow until we were almost at the hour glass
Image
. The hour glass was a fantastic snow climb with hard snow only at the narrow part itself

. The sling was buried in ice but we uncovered them so you could see their condition and the difficulty in using them
Image
. We met 3 people the day before who said they had gone left above the slings and had a difficult time so we went straight up the middle and cruised to the summit
Image
. We took the obligatory summit photots, first of Tyson 12, then me 13
Image
and then of the traverse
Image
. We then headed down

.A marmot who had watched our entire adventure was hugely impressed

. I took a couple of pictures of the Lake Como

, the upper lake

, and the LB route

so people could see the conditions.

Having had conditions that were as good as they can be we took out time getting down and were back at the lake at 11:30 for lunch.

Nice TR, thanks for the beta. Thinking of going up there this weekend if I can get a climbing partner.
