Gordy, Bill and I were in the middle of our annual trip to Colorado, trying to figure out which peak to go after next. After summiting San Luis Peak on Friday, 8/8/08, we considered our options. We were originally considering a Shavano/Tabe combo, but since Bill had a few cramps on our thundered-off descent of San Luis on Thursday evening, we thought we'd try something a little bit easier. Huron became a strong candidate.
So after our descent of San Luis, we drove all the way to the Huron trailhead. We were able to get to the 4WD trailhead in Bill's Jeep Laredo. It was pretty rough, but Bill did an excellent job navigating it without any issues. We set up camp planning for an early ascent on Saturday morning.
We got up and left the trailhead at 4:45 am, the first ones on the mountain that morning. We were just above treeline when daylight was hitting and we saw an elk herd running below Huron's summit, then turning towards Browns Peak. We arrived at the push up to the ridgeline and the trail became more steep at that point. A guy from Houston passed us in this section. He was moving fast and told us he started really early from the 2WD trailhead.
We then made our final push to the summit and made it there around 7:45. The Houston climber took a pic of us 3 on Huron's summit (pic below). This was Bill's first 14er and we were very happy for him. #8 for Gordy and #25 for me. We couldn't see much from the summit as we were clouded in, but it was excellent nonetheless. On the way down, we probably passed 70 or more people on their way up. Busy day on Huron this Saturday, although this is probably pretty normal these days for a summer weekend. Also got a good shot of the 3 Apostles when approaching treeline (pic below).
