Pikes Peak - NW Slopes from Crags Campground |
We started out from the Crags Campground at 7:40 a.m. It took us 5 full hours to reach the summit, and 9 hours total including a 30 minute lunch/potty stop on top at the visitor's center. Sorry, we both forgot to bring our cameras so no pictures. Bill Middlebrook's description is pretty accurate with one exception, using a GPS device we measured our round-trip climb mileage at close to 13.5 miles.
The wind was brutal and took a lot out of us. Anyone planning to climb this route should plan for a strong and very unpleasant wind, especially above 11,000 feet. Our faces got sandblasted with dust and rocks on the upper part of the climb when you are near the road. You will want to have goggles or really good wrap-around sunglasses to keep the dust out of your eyes.
I have summited a 14'er 21 times, and this was by far the worst wind conditions I have faced. My climbing partner and I are both in good physical condition and this hike totally wiped us both out, mainly because of the very high winds.
My recommendation would be to start this climb by 6:00 a.m. or as early as you can possibly do it.
