Longs Keyhole Route - Great Day
Wow! What an awesome day on Longs Peak. The temp had to have been in the 50‘s at baseline and up to the Boulder Field, then in the upper 20‘s (with the wind chill factor) past the boulder field. I didn‘t use crampons until going up the coulier (sp?) but then used them and my ice axe the rest of the way. Was glad for my snowshoes for a little bit at the end of the day, but could have gotten by without them. Definitely recommend leaving early; otherwise, you will need snowshoes. Not too windy or cold uptop, but I definitely didn‘t stick around too long to find out how cold it might be. This has been the best hike this spring for me so far and I enjoyed it more than the first time I did it (from the Glacier Gorge TH) last August with an overnight along the way. I much prefer this time of the year.

0345-0730 TH to Boulder Field
0800-1100 Ascent to Summit
1100-1230 Descent to Boulder Field (had fun glissading)
1300-1545 Boulder Field to TH

I don‘t think I‘ve read any other reports about anyone doing the standard route yet, the park service will probably keep it rated technical for quite a while to come. Good for you!

Sounds like a beautiful hike! I hope to make an attempt with my daughter in a week or two. Do you think we will need crampons, snoeshoes, and/or an ice ax if we take the standard route? Also, do you think we could tent camp halfway up? I wasn‘t sure if camping permit was required, and I wasn‘t sure if the snow would prevent it. Any input you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
