 Pike‘s Peak from Crag‘s Campground
Great 11.5 hr hike. Weather was beautiful. Snowshoes not needed. Going down around 2 pm, the snow was getting slushy and I was falling through up to my knees in some areas - not nice.

RANGERS - THE BIG NEGATIVE: I decided to hike the road some near the top - got stopped by park ranger‘s or whoever the people in the blue trucks with lights are and told to get off the road. 5 minutes later another one went by and seemed p.o.‘d that I hadn‘t gotten off yet. The weather was great, the traffic wasn‘t bad - I don‘t see what in the world the problem was, but I won‘t be doing Pike‘s Peak for awhile because of it. I moved off to trample on alpine tundra, as directed.

Hiking on the road isn‘t permitted. Nor is biking. You can cross it numerous times (as the trail from the Crags Campground does) but you can‘t actually hike on it. It‘s a liability thing and just something you have to deal with.

We got the same treatment and ended up taking some ass backward way to the summit to avoid anymore confrontations, but it was a great day nonetheless. Crags route = amazing views and hike 1st half, downright annoying 2nd half, that mountain would be enjoyed so much more if it wasn‘t for that road, but I guess its a necesary evil when you have older family members come out and want to see what its like to be at 14K feet.

Postholing is pretty much standard along Crags on the way back too, we experienced the same exact thing.
