In an effort to summit both peaks and avoid some of the crowds,I drove up to TH Friday evening and got an early start(4:15/4:30) donning head lamp and high hopes.
First time navigating with headlamp. Glad to have such a well traveled and easy to follow trail. Made it to the sign in about 50 min. Bills route description ,which I had previously read ,was helpful as I wound my way around and up.
Every once in awhile I could see a headlamp or two in the distance but met know one (which is somewhat unusual for me considering my pace).As I got to the switchbacks the sun was about to make its appearance. A couple of guys from the party that left the TH 1/2 hr before me decided they weren‘t prepared for this effort and headed back down(brief discussion).
Around this time I began to get passed by those who started a bit later.On the switchback reach just below rock towers I was greeted by four male goats not but 5 or 10‘ from trail,they didn‘t seem to care!
For me the slog up the switchbacks was ever slowing process.Reached the summit about 9:00. At one pause on switchbacks,I took a look at Torreys with my binoculars ,dang that looks steep! On the summit there were people attaining summit from all directions.A look down you could see steady line of hikers making thier way up.Spent about an hour on top then made my way down trail to spot for move over to Torreys.
Hiked up from saddle a little way before making decision to not go up cause I feel I didn‘t have it in my "tank" to get up and back to TH. Glad I made and stuck to that decision cause it took 4 hrs to get down as it was---whew---Torreys will be there when I return. 8)
