 Mt. Massive (East Slopes)
I climbed the East Slopes today on Mt. Massive..

I got a late start which made me a little nervous because of this mountain and area's reputation for wicked afternoon storms.. I left the Massive trailhead at 7:15 am and found that Roach is dead on with the length of this baby..

It seemed that the Colorado Trail portion of the hike lasted forever.. Eventually, the trail to Massive breaks off to the left and climbs steadily for the remainder of the hike..My GPS had the trail juntion at 3.4 miles.. The east slopes are in great shape..

I was a little worried that the views wouldnt be great because there was quite a bit of fog and overcast skies when breaking out of treeline.. Massive is certainly Massive! It is a long climb but certainly a rewarding one.. I reached the summit at three hours and 14 minutes.

Pretty good time considering I stopped on South Massive to take some photos.. Massive offers great views of Mt Elbert, the Maroon Bells, Snowmass, Capital, La Plata and Mt. Holy Cross as well..

I loved the condition of the trail and actually saw some CFI workers on my way up.. They do a great job.. The way down was not difficult and I even challenged myself a little by running.. A lot of this climb is above tree line and would be a complete nightmare in a thunder storm.. It is a long way down to treeline and there is nowhere to hide form a storm... Watch the clouds on Massive for sure.. To quote Roach "THE SIZE OF THIS PEAK WILL BECOME APPARENT LONG BEFORE YOU REACH THE SUMMIT" It certainly is a big hill..
